‘What in the polyester?’: Man proposes to girlfriend inside Zara changing room as aghast women say it has ‘unlocked a new fear’

A man’s marriage proposal inside a Zara changing room has sharply divided opinion online after he posted the clip on TikTok

Daniil Vorozhbyt has just over 1,000 followers on the social media platform, but a video of him getting down on one knee while trying on clothes at Zara has been viewed nearly five million times.

TikTok users were left scratching their heads as the clip showed Daniil, wearing socks and white linen trousers with the tag still on, asking his girlfriend to marry him outside a fitting room.

The post included a picture of Daniil’s now-fiancée showing off her ring, and it was captioned with three hashtags: ‘love you’, ‘Zara’, and ‘proposal’.

His post spread like wildfire as TikTok users tried to understand why Daniil decided to pop the question inside a changing room, with one person writing: ‘What in the polyester?’

Some suggested the only ‘acceptable’ reason was if the couple ‘met [while] working’ or shopping at the store, while others quickly noticed the tag hanging from Daniil’s trousers.

‘At least buy the fit first,’ one person quipped, while another said the proposal had ‘unlocked a new fear’ that their partner might do something similar.

Daniil has not replied to any of the comments at the time of writing.

However, his 22-second video sparked strong reactions online, with one person writing: ‘May this love never find me.’

Another incredulous user added: ‘In a changing room…? I’d run for the hills.’

‘Good day to be single,’ a third quipped, while one message read: ‘The wedding is going to be at Zara home, right?’

The post has received over 3,100 comments at the time of writing, with multiple users baffled by Daniil’s decision to propose while wearing socks and clothes he was still trying on.

‘Is this a joke?’ one person asked, while another wrote: ‘Bro is smart, he didn’t want to spend extra money on the clothes for the proposal.’

Suggesting the proposal is mundane or bland, one user joked: ‘An egg salad looks like it would be spicy for you guys.’

Some even suggested the video was staged for views, while others called it a ‘tutorial on how not to propose’ after Daniil posted the clip on April 29.

However, several people also defended Daniil’s ‘spontaneous’ proposal, adding that it was authentic in a world full of ‘flashy’ or ‘big gestures’ for social media.

‘We complain about how social media is full of false proposals, fake things, or big gestures all for the gram,’ one TikTok user said. ‘Then you see a simple proposal, and you get all judgmental. I despise TikTok’s comments section…’

Another wrote: ‘Why are you all so offended and ready to judge everyone? A wedding proposal doesn’t need to be flashy, under the Eiffel Tower or in a gondola on the Venetian canals to be meaningful. That would have been far more predictable.

‘This man managed to capture her attention when she least expected it, in an ordinary everyday moment -and that’s what truly matters. In fact, their story will probably be far more interesting down the line when people ask, “How did you get engaged?” than most other people’s stories.’

Like Daniil’s clip, which drew mixed reactions, another man’s decision to propose to his girlfriend outside the bathrooms on an EasyJet flight also sparked furious social media debate last year.

The unnamed man got down on one knee to his partner while standing outside the toilets during the flight to Spain.

Passenger Nicki Gunner recorded the mid-flight proposal and shared it to TikTok, writing, ‘Nothing beats an EasyJet proposal outside the toilets on a flight to Benidorm.’

Nicki recorded the smiling man, dressed in a white shirt and denim shorts, as he held his partner’s hands in his and popped the question.

There was a brief interruption as one person tried to get out of the toilet, but they quickly backed away after they spotted what was about to happen

His fiancée appeared delighted with the proposal and said yes before her would-be husband placed the engagement ring on her hand for the first time.

The passengers, who had a clear view of the proposal due to it taking place at the top of the aisleway and by the toilets, quickly erupted into cheers, marking a happy start to the couple’s holiday.

The reception was mixed, with many questioning why he would pick the unique proposal location. One questioned, ‘Why not wait until you were in Benidorm?’

Another agreed, asking, ‘Why didn’t he propose at the destination.’

A third took a harsher stance, writing, ‘I’d be questioning my life choices.’
