His cousin Ebony Smith told the Brighton Argus he had been ‘loving, determined and caring’, adding: ‘He was so inquisitive and he should have been going places, but he had a hard life.

‘He made some choices that were not the best, but he had brains growing up – he could have been a doctor.’

Mr Day was said to have spent time in prison as a teenager before spiralling into drug abuse, his cousin said, after distancing himself from his family.

He became homeless and had lived between Brighton and Hastings. Moon’s Lodge is described by locals as a ‘hostel’ or a ‘halfway house’.

Under the name Marcus, he was later filmed by TikTok content creator Jason Frost as he was interviewed about his life.

Mr Frost, whose content largely revolves around interviewing vulnerable individuals, said: ‘Sad news to hear about what happened in Brighton last night.

‘We started working with Tio a few months ago, trying to help him move in a better direction. I won’t go into detail, but sadly we had to step away.

‘No one deserves this. My thoughts are with him and his family at this time.’

A friend wrote under Mr Frost’s TikTok post: ‘I knew Fletcher very well. We went through a few years of my addiction together and this is so sad. Never forgotten Fletcher. I will always speak your name buddy.’

The 26-year-old suspect remains in custody for police questioning.

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays of Sussex Police said on Sunday: ‘This incident has had devastating consequences, resulting in the loss of one man’s life and leaving another with serious injuries.

‘There is not believed to be a wider risk to the public, and a thorough investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances.’

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police quoting Operating Wenthill. The force has been contacted for further comment.
