Crowning of Queen Lauren! Spilling out of her Met Gala gown, how Sanchez got everything she ever wanted… despite the ‘very disturbing’ gossip now swirling

Tonight, all eyes are on Lauren Sanchez Bezos as she steps into fashion’s inner sanctum in her role as one of the honorary co-chairs for the Met Gala, signaling a shifting of the social guard – for better or for worse – at one of the most exclusive nights on the global calendar.

With her bust spilling out of her custom Schiaparelli number, the former journalist-turned-socialite wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is holding court among fashion’s elite – a position she and her billionaire husband are understood to have clinched after pouring millions into the star-studded event as its primary sponsors.

Her gown, and its bejeweled off-the-shoulder strap showcasing her buxom figure, was inspired by John Singer Sargent’s infamous Madame X, a portrait of French socialite Madame Pierre Gautreau that scandalized high society when it first debuted. It’s a seeming wink and a nod to the controversy that has swirled around Sanchez Bezos throughout the lead up to the Met Gala.

Taking her position at the top of the stairs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art nearby Anna Wintour and Nicole Kidman, Sanchez Bezos, 56, has cemented her arrival at the very pinnacle of high society, placing herself firmly at the center of a night where power, money and style collide.

Sanchez Bezos’s ascent to seeming queen of the Met Gala has been swift and nothing short of strategic. The former broadcast journalist attended her first Met Gala in 2024 after getting engaged to Bezos. Now, just two years later, she’s co-hosting the affair alongside Wintour in an arc that feels fit for a fairy tale – that is, if fairy tales were about billionaires and can be bought: Page Six reports that the Bezoses allegedly paid at least $10 million for the honor of sponsoring the gala.

The Bezoses have made it no secret that they’re eager to be counted among the influential in fashion and have shrewdly ingratiated themselves and their ample pocketbook with fashion’s most powerful figure, Wintour. Sanchez Bezos was seen hobnobbing with the glitterati at Wintour’s pre-party on Sunday night, effectively staking her claim as royalty.

‘Lauren is willing to shake up society with risk-taking and an upbeat spirit that is as boundless as her energy,’ Wintour said of Sanchez Bezos at Monday’s museum press conference.

This co-sign from the industry’s top brass, however, hasn’t quite guaranteed the widespread approval in fashion that the billionaire couple so seemingly craves. Even before protests began popping up around the city, an industry insider told the Daily Mail that the Bezoses’ primary sponsorship and honorary co-chairing of the Met Gala feels like a ‘real slap in the face.’

But it should come as no surprise, given that Sanchez Bezos has long been plotting her moment in the spotlight, armed with sheer ambition. In fact, she ran headfirst into the limelight when she first coupled with Bezos, starting with their illicit extramarital affair in 2018 and eventually their star-studded wedding in 2025.

Along the way, the Bezoses have become fixtures of the gala circuit and regulars at the parties of the powerful, as the couple’s seeming hunger to be accepted in the most influential circles of society intensified, attending bashes like the glitzy amfAR gala in Cannes and annual Vanity Fair Oscars bash.

Their social ambitions and thirst for clout, however, have been most apparent in their unabashed vim to break into the most notoriously exclusive circle of all – the fashion world.

Shortly after they got engaged, the Bezoses secured a Vogue feature for Sanchez Bezos, which was later followed up in 2025 with a digital cover story featuring her in a custom Dolce & Gabbana wedding gown. This year, the couple made headlines when they appeared chummily alongside Wintour front row at the Paris couture shows, the couple posing showily for street style photos and cozying up to elite designers such as Dior creative director Jonathan Anderson.

During this Paris trip, Sanchez Bezos was also spotted strolling with her new stylist, fashion architect Law Roach, best known for styling celebrity high fashion heavy hitters like Zendaya, Hunter Schafer and Celine Dion. In Paris, Roach outfitted Bezos in demure designer skirt suits and lady-like ensembles that were a far cry from the bombshell bustiers and racy corseted looks that have long been her signature, signaling Sanchez Bezos’s seeming desire to remake herself in the image of high fashion.

However, scoring Wintour’s co-sign has been the biggest gain that the Bezoses have made towards their goal of ascending fashion’s upper echelons and their honorary co-chairing of the Met Gala has been the most overt show of support that Wintour has given them.

At the museum’s press conference on Monday, Wintour praised Sanchez Bezos, who sported an uncharacteristically demure gray sheath dress and a conservative French twist updo, as a ‘force for joy,’ who was ‘full of enthusiasm and good ideas,’ and who was an active participant as an honorary co-chair, attending planning meetings.

‘She and her husband, Jeff, have shown with this event that they genuinely, genuinely care about giving back,’ Wintour said, noting the couple’s immense ‘generosity.’

Such words mean a lot, as Wintour has presided over the Met Gala for over 30 years, helping to shape the event from just another fundraiser gala on the New York social calendar to an internationally renowned and star-studded event that’s often referred to as the ‘biggest night in fashion.’ The event is invite-only, with invited attendees paying $100,000 for individual tickets and upwards of $350,000 for a table, and has often been seen as the embodiment of fashion’s notorious gatekeeping.

Following the announcement that Bezoses would be the primary sponsors and honorary co-chairs of the 2026 Met Gala, Wintour told CNN that she considered Sanchez Bezos a ‘great lover of costume and obviously of fashion’ and that the new Mrs Bezos would be ‘a wonderful asset to the museum and to the event.’

However, not all have welcomed them with such open arms. A fashion insider told the Daily Mail that the couple’s current alignment with the Trump administration is at odds with the generally liberal politics of the fashion industry.

‘Of all the wealthy people to sponsor this, I think they definitely rub people the wrong way,’ they told the Daily Mail, adding they find it ‘very hurtful and very disturbing’ for them to be ‘the face of this year’s Met Gala.’

The insider also noted that the Bezoses presiding over the Met Gala during a time when the country is at war and the majority of people in the US are experiencing economic hardship also feels grossly out of touch, especially as the couple has been associated with a kind of high-octane conspicuous consumption, unapologetically flaunting their immense wealth.

‘When so many people are struggling just to have their basic needs met, that’s not necessarily the image that everyone wants to see,’ they said.

And if the insider’s reaction to Sanchez Bezos’s bridal Vogue feature is any indication, Mrs Bezos has a far way to go before she gets embraced by the fashion industry. The insider made it clear that Sanchez Bezos having a Vogue cover, often seen as one of the industry’s greatest honors and a sign of acceptance, is a common ‘misconception.’

The insider said: ‘She didn’t get a cover for her wedding dress. She got a digital cover treatment put on her story, but it wasn’t a Vogue cover, technically.’

Industry insiders aren’t the only ones bristling at the Bezoses’ attempts to insinuate themselves into fashion’s elite inner circles by sponsoring the Met Gala. Protests have been staged both at the Met Museum and across New York City ahead of the event, led by the anti-billionaire activist group, Everyone Hates Elon, with organizers calling for a boycott of the event.

Bezos, who has a net worth of $259 billion, has also been slammed for underwriting the Met Gala, while instituting mass layoffs this year at the Washington Post and Amazon and allegedly continuing to enforce controversial labor practices at the latter.

Now, the backlash seems to be having real-time impacts on the event’s guestlist as well. The industry insider also revealed that Meryl Streep was rumored to be one of the night’s co-chairs, but that The Devil Wears Prada 2 actor backed out of the gig after learning of the Bezoses’ lead sponsorship.

Other celebrities, like supermodel Bella Hadid and actor Taraji P Henson, who have both attended the gala in the past, have criticized the Bezoses’ sponsorship on social media. NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani also said he won’t be attending this year’s Met Gala, breaking tradition.

But Streep’s absence is perhaps even more weighted considering that The Devil Wears Prada 2 features a villainous tech billionaire character that bears more than a striking thematic resemblance to Bezos. That this character has a scheming, socially climbing girlfriend that could be compared to Sanchez Bezos does not seem to be a coincidence.

Still, it’s a far cry from her days as a journalist for outlets like Fox Sports, where she was an anchor, and Extra, where she worked as a correspondent and perhaps even more disparate from her childhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

But by sponsoring the Met Gala and becoming honorary co-chairs, the Bezoses have finally secured entry into the exclusive circles that once eluded them.

With Bezos’s billions at her disposal, there is no price for entry too high. The world is her oyster, a kingdom over which she can reign supreme. But as controversy swirls with clarion calls for boycott and behind-the-scenes dissent, it’s worth asking what she’s really reigning over.
