British mother, 42, is killed in front of her family after van they were in ploughs into the back of a lorry on Spanish highway

A British mother has been killed in front of her family after the van they were in ploughed into the back of a lorry on a Spanish highway.

The 42-year-old woman passed away on Saturday following the tragic crash on the A-7 motorway in Totana, Murcia.

The van hit the back of the lorry just before 2pm that day, the Spanish Eye reported, leaving the woman dead and an 18-year-old heavily injured.

He was taken to the nearby Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital. A 40-year-old man and a seven-year-old girl were also hurt in the crash, though their injuries were described as less serious.

The two drivers in the cabin of the lorry were treated for minor injuries.

Images from the scene appear to show large, mangled parts of the van on the road, with shattered glass surrounding the crash site.

Spanish authorities called the incident ‘extremely serious’, stating that one person was thrown from the van during the collision and found lying on the road.

Emergency services, including Guardia Civil traffic officers, firefighters and ambulances, were sent to the scene of the crash.

Fire crews were put on standby, in anticipation of a possible rescue from the wreckage.

The accident caused traffic to back up for nearly a mile, with the right-hand lane of the motorway being temporarily closed.

While an investigation into the matter is still ongoing, it was reported that distraction may have been a factor in the tragedy.

The Daily Mail has contacted the UK’s foreign office for comment.
