Chelsea vs Man City preview
It’s been a while, but Chelsea and Manchester City return to Premier League action this afternoon.
With both sides eliminated from the Champions League in the last round, they’ve had the rare luxury of a full week off heading into this one, and both will hope to use their recent FA Cup victories as a springboard for the remainder of the campaign.
Chelsea ended a run of four straight defeats with a thumping 7-0 win over Port Vale to book their place in the semi-finals against Leeds.
But they’ll need to improve in the league if they are to secure Champions League football next season, although fifth place is now enough to qualify.
Liam Rosenior’s side are sixth, one point behind Liverpool with seven games remaining, but have taken just four points from their last five. In fact, since February 10, only Leeds and Tottenham have picked up fewer points than the Blues.
There is also the added complication of Enzo Fernandez missing out after his comments over his future during the international break.
And the recent record in this fixture does not inspire much confidence for the hosts.
Chelsea are winless in their last nine Premier League games against Manchester City (D3 L6), while City have won four of their last five away league games at Stamford Bridge.
As for City, they’ll simply want to continue their strong form after lifting the Carabao Cup against Arsenal and hammering Liverpool 4-0 in the FA Cup.
Pep Guardiola’s side are nine points behind Arsenal, but still have a game in hand and a head-to-head to come – results that could cut the gap to just three.
There is also a strong April trend in their favour. City have won 28 of their last 31 Premier League games in April (D2 L1), while under Guardiola they average 2.50 points per game in the month – the highest of any side to play 15+ matches in a specific month under a single manager.
