Netflix fans confused as Charlie Hunnam debuts ‘new accent’ asking ‘why is he speaking like that?’

NETFLIX fans have been left hugely confused by screen star Charlie Hunnam’s new accent.

Gone is the 45-year-old’s Geordie twang in a behind-the-scenes video posted to social media, in favour of an Americanised tone.

Charlie, who recently starred in the latest instalment of Netflix‘s anthology series Monster, was filming scenes for the streaming service’s Tudum Magazine when fans clocked the timbre change.

He was seen putting a record on and saying: “Brilliant, there you go, now we are having a party”.

As the camera captured him in the kitchen, he pulls off his socks and says: “I even cut my toe nails yesterday,” before throwing his garments off-set.

He samples food in a pan which he hails: “Not bad,” before explaining how pasta puttanesca is his signature dish.

Referring to the tasty dish he was whipping up on-shoot he added: “I think we over cooked the pasta but that’s alright”.

While many will have been glued to his routine, others flocked to the Instagram comments section to remark on his new accent.

One posted: “Dude! Where’s the Geordie accent?”

Another wrote: “He kinda sounds like an American at this point lol… still hot”.

A third mused: “Why’s he speaking in an American accent?”

One added a sad face Emoji as they put: “The Geordie is gone”.

Another commented: “He is still gorgeous”.

The actor – who grew to acclaim on Sons of Anarchy where he spoke in an American twang – was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1980.

He moved to Cumbria aged 12 and landed his first TV role on Newcastle-based school series Byker Grove.

He recently addressed the fan frenzy over his voice and branded it “embarrassing”.

Charlie told Variety in 2024: “It’s so embarrassing to say as an Englishman, but I’d been working in America for so long, that when I got King Arthur, I had to hire a dialect coach to help me sound English again, which was sort of an absurd situation to find myself in”.

He also added to 7 News Australia: “I have a strange accent myself, it’s half English, half American, and everybody, my entire life, has thought I was Australian”.

During his early TV years, Charlie was adored by popstar Madonna, who helped his career after seeing him in Channel 4’s 90s smash hit Queer as Folk.

He was later invited to be a judge at a Mr Gay Ireland competition.

It would lead to early day parts in films Nicholas Nickleby and Abandon, and TV shows like Undeclared and Young Americans before his big screen break in Sons of Anarchy.

Charlie’s career has since shot into the stratosphere, leading to parts in Green Street, Pacific Rim, The Gentleman, Rebel Moon and now Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
