THE M25 is closed in both directions with traffic grinding to a halt sparking Easter getaway chaos.

The motorway is closed between Junction 29 (Upminster) and Junction 30 (Purfleet) in Essex.

National Highways said the closure is due to a “serious road traffic collision” that occurred just before 8pm this evening.

Emergency services are at the scene while traffic officers are also in attendance to assist with traffic management.

Motorists have been urged to plan ahead and allow for extra journey time.

Some drivers on social media have claimed they have been stuck in standstill traffic for nearly 90 minutes.

It is currently estimated that normal traffic conditions will not return to normal until after 3am tomorrow morning.

Traffic within the closure is being released from the rear of the queue on the clockwise carriageway.

Arrangements are also being made to release anti-clockwise traffic.

The Sun has contacted the Metropolitan Police for comment.

Elsewhere, the M6 Toll in the West Midlands is currently closed northbound between Junction 6 (Burntwood) and the M6 at Junction 11.

This is due to emergency roadworks following an collision earlier today involving an overturned van.

The A1 in Nottinghamshire is also closed in both directions between the A46 near Newark-on-Trent and the B6325 near North Muskham after a crash just after 9pm this evening.

Emergency services are in attendance with the road expected to remain closed throughout the night.

M25 Diversion Routes:

Clockwise traffic is being diverted via the hollow triangle symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the M25 J29 on to the A127
  • Exit at the next roundabout and take the 4th exit on to the A128
  • Travel on the A128 towards Orsett
  • At Orsett Cock roundabout, take the 5th exit onto the A13 towards London.
  • Bear left onto the M25 and take the first exit at J30 roundabout to re-join the M25 towards Dartford Crossing.

Anti-clockwise traffic is being diverted via the hollow square symbol on road signs:

  • From M25 Junction 30 exit slip roundabout take 3rd exit onto A13 towards Tilbury.
  • At A128 bear left onto exit slip and then take 1st exit at “Orsett Cock” roundabout onto A128 towards Brentwood.
  • At “Halfway House” roundabout take 1st exit onto A127 towards London.
  • Follow A127 and take exit slip towards M25 Junction 29 and then take 3rd exit at roundabout to rejoin M25 towards Stanstead.
