There are many reasons women gravitate to shorter hairstyles as they get older – from age-related shedding that makes their tresses thinner to cutting down styling time.
But not all short hairdos are created equal – they can either soften your appearance or ‘unintentionally age’ you, warned celebrity stylist Warren Edwards.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, the hair expert said factors like hair density and styling can play a huge role in determining the right cut for women over 40.
Tatiana Karelina agreed, saying short hair can be an ‘incredibly chic’ option as you get older, so long as your stylist understands ‘balance, softness and proportion’.
‘A shorter cut should enhance the bone structure and brighten the face, not harden features or exaggerate areas we naturally become more conscious of with age, such as jawlines, necks, or loss of volume,’ the hair extension specialist added.
Female celebrities are a ‘great example’ of how short hair can either modernise or date your look, Warren said, as he and Tatiana studied Hollywood’s most famous short haircuts…
Princess Charlene of Monaco
Princess Charlene of Monaco sporting two different short haircuts
Monaco’s Princess Charlene, 48, presents two completely different hair identities in these images, and the longer, softly waved blonde bob creates a noticeably more youthful and approachable appearance, according to the celebrity hairstylist.
Warren said: ‘The style on the left adds softness around the face, movement through the mid-lengths, and a relaxed elegance that brightens her overall look.
‘In contrast, the ultra-short pixie cut feels sharper, more editorial, and highly sophisticated, emphasising bone structure and creating a stronger, more severe aesthetic.
‘While the pixie showcases confidence and modern refinement, the textured bob introduces warmth, femininity, and softness, which naturally reads as fresher and younger.’
Kris Jenner
Kris Jenner’s signature pixie was almost as famous as her new facelift, but the momager has swapped it for a fringed look in recent months
Kris Jenner, 70, is a really interesting example because her signature short pixie can sometimes create a harsher overall effect, Warren told the Daily Mail.
Her bob with the fringe, which Kris debuted with her much-talked-about facelift, feels much more youthful because it introduces movement and softness around the face, he continued.
‘The fringe breaks up the hairline gently and frames the eyes, while the fuller bob shape gives the illusion of more density and body through the hair. It feels more modern, less severe and ultimately much softer against the skin.’
Tatiana said the success of Kris’s polished pixie cut on the left comes from the height at the crown and softness through the front.
‘Without that volume, short hair can quickly look ageing and severe,’ she warned.
Halle Berry
Halle Berry’s bobs underscore how they can make a person look completely different
Halle Berry, 59, demonstrates how two similar hairstyles can create completely different effects.
Both her looks are cropped above the shoulders, but the ‘universally flattering’ softly waved bob on the right makes her look more ‘youthful’, said Warren.
He said: ‘The asymmetrical pixie on the left feels sharper, edgier, and more fashion-forward, with the close sides and dramatic blonde fringe drawing attention to her bone structure and creating a more angular appearance.
‘In contrast, the softly waved bob on the right appears more youthful and universally flattering, as the added movement, softness, and fullness around the face create the illusion of greater hair density and a healthier overall look.’
His verdict? While the Catwoman star suits both styles due to her strong facial symmetry and features, the textured bob gives her a ‘fresher, softer, and more effortlessly youthful effect’.
Michelle Williams
Michelle Williams should opt for feathered and tousled cuts
Michelle Williams’s delicate features and bone structure mean she can pull off more short styles, according to Tatiana.
However, the ones that flatter her most are feathered and slightly tousled like the bob on the right.
‘If the cut becomes too blunt or overly styled, it can lose the effortless softness that makes her look so youthful,’ she explained.
Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron can pull off most short haircuts – but sleek buzzed styles can make her look ‘severe’
Like Michelle, Charlize Theron can carry almost any haircut because of her incredible bone structure, but even on her, the severe short cut can sometimes look too sharp, Tatiana said.
‘She looks most flattering with slightly longer hair when there is softness and texture around the face.
‘Sleek buzzed or ultra-tight styles like she’s sporting on the left can occasionally make her appear more severe rather than glamorous.
Ginnifer Goodwin
Ginnifer Goodwin is among the famous faces best known for short hair
Ginnifer Goodwin’s transition from the sharp quiffed pixie style on the left to softer, fringe-led cut also shows how modern texture can transform short hair.
Warren said: ‘The quiff styles were fashion-forward at the time but often relied on strong lines and height, which can read harsher over time.
‘Her softer fringe styles feel much more wearable and youthful because they create movement around the forehead and eyes, soften facial contours and give the haircut a more relaxed finish.
The added texture makes the style feel contemporary rather than overly structured,’ he added.
Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts’ hair reveals how styling can make a massive difference to the overall look
Naomi Watts’s transformation proves how styling can completely change ‘the feel of short hair’, said Warren.
‘When her hair has been worn slicked back, it can sometimes emphasise facial structure and create a more severe appearance, particularly under strong lighting or on the red carpet.
‘Her softer bob styles are much more flattering because they add movement, texture and width around the face. The softness around the jawline and cheekbones creates a fresher, more effortless look that feels younger and more current.
Hannah Waddingham
Hannah Waddingham has also opted for different short haircuts over the years
Hannah Waddingham looks ‘younger and more relaxed’ in the image on the left because of the contemporary, chin-length hairdo, Warren said.
‘The image on the left leans into classic Hollywood glamour with fuller side volume, sculpted waves, and a polished finish that gives elegance and sophistication.
‘In contrast, the image on the right feels softer, fresher, and more contemporary, with relaxed texture, lighter movement, and effortless face-framing layers that create a more youthful appearance,’ he explained how the two bobs create very different impressions.
He added that the ‘tousled’ styling helps lift and soften the Ted Lasso actress’s features naturally, while the left style delivers a more refined, red-carpet aesthetic.
While both styles are flattering, Hannah’s hair in the image on the right has a ‘modern, effortless quality’ that makes her appear younger and more relaxed, the hair expert concluded.
However, Tatiana added that very short hair risks removing that softness and can make features appear more angular.
Robin Wright
House of Cards actress Robin Wright famously wears her hair cropped short
Robin Wright demonstrates how sophisticated short hair can look over 40 when it is tailored correctly, Tatiana said.
‘Her layered pixie cut on the right with soft texture is incredibly flattering because they create lift and movement.
‘If the hair is cut too close around the sides, however, it can emphasise facial sharpness rather than softness,’ the stylist added.
