Live in your turret era! Follow in Alan Carr’s footsteps and buy your own Scottish castle for £600,000

A Scottish castle has gone on sale for the bargain price of £600,000 – and it comes with its own Traitors turret.

The 136-year-old property in Kirkcaldy, south of Edinburgh, combines modern fittings with historic features.

The Baronial Villa – often referred to as a castle because of its iconic spire and secret turret – boasts impressive marble fireplaces and decorative ceilings.

It is on the market of £100,000 less than its estimated value.

Owning a castle is the latest property trend for the rich and famous. Celebrity Traitors winner Alan Carr recently bought 19th Century Ayton Castle in the Scottish Borders for £3.25million.

It comes with 17 bedrooms and 160 acres of land, and its own working railway.

The comedian, 49, proclaimed he is living in his ‘turret-era’ after spending time at Ardross Castle in the Highlands last summer while filming the hit BBC show.

The purchase also means he could add the title of baron to his name.

The Kirkcaldy castle is located close to the town’s train station, with an easy route to Edinburgh.

On the ground floor there is a large lounge and a separate sitting room, each with a fireplace.

There is also a reception hall, which was most recently used by the wellness centre as a front desk, as well as a modern dining room and kitchen.

Two of the bedrooms are also on the ground floor, with the other six located on the first floor, alongside a drawing room.

There are three bathrooms in the property, two located upstairs and one on the ground floor.

It was most recently used as a Thai Chi wellness centre and spa.

The property is being sold by Slater Hogg and Howison estate agents.

The listing reads: ‘We are pleased to bring to market this striking, B listed, Scots Baronial Villa.

‘Built in the 1890’s, the property, with its distinctive conical-roofed bartizan, is located within a central and sought-after area of Kirkcaldy.

‘And is ideally situated for an abundance of amenities, including Kirkcaldy mainline train station, providing regular services including to Edinburgh.

‘Currently run as a well-being centre, the property offers many original period features including marble fireplaces, intricate cornicing and decorative ceilings.

‘With well-proportioned and flexible accommodation, making this an exciting opportunity to create a wonderful family home of note.’

It added: ‘The accommodation is vast and includes a magnificent reception hall and upper landing, lounge and drawing rooms with bay windows.

‘And beautiful fireplaces, modern fitted kitchen, dining and sitting rooms, approximately eight bedrooms, three bathrooms, studies, cloakroom and various ancillary rooms.

‘Externally, there is off-street parking and mature south-facing gardens.

‘It is £100,000 below home report valuation.’

The listing means potential buyers can follow in the footsteps of the much-loved comedian.

After spending time at the iconic Ardross Castle last year filming Celebrity Traitors, Alan Carr decided to splash out on his very own baroque abode in Scotland.

He now reportedly has the rights to the The Barony of Ayton title, after buying Ayton Castle.

His new sprawling estate features a whopping 16 bedrooms, 160 acres of gardens and even its own miniature railway.

And Alan has big plans for the grandiose property, having signed a seven-figure deal with Disney+ to film a series documenting the renovation of the castle into a luxury hotel and spa.

The show, which has the working title Castle Man, is set to take on a similar set up to his hit BBC home renovation series with Amanda Holden and is reportedly reportedly being produced by Expectation, the same company responsible for Clarkson’s Farm.

Alan said of the purchase: ‘Some men when they have a midlife crisis buy a Lamborghini or grow a ponytail, but me – I want my very own castle.

‘Since I was a boy in Northampton, I’ve always dreamt big, and have always been enchanted with the history and romance of a stately home.

‘As I turn 50, I feel it’s time, all I want is a turret to call my own — get me over that drawbridge.’
