You and I Saw a Revival Meeting; the Left Saw Hate – HotAir

There is a saying that exactly fits the reactions of the right and the left to Charlie Kirk’s memorial service: one screen, but two movies.

Over 100 million people tuned in to see at least some portion of the memorial service, and many millions more will watch clips from various speeches or the commentary around the event. A hundred thousand people, more or less, were inside the building, and tens of thousands were at the site of the event and couldn’t get a seat inside.

Two planeloads of White House officials attended, including the President and Vice President, both of whom spoke. The vast majority of the content focused on Charlie’s faith in Jesus Christ or his mission to evangelize for his beliefs in freedom, persuasion, or his religion.

His wife spoke of forgiveness.

It was, by any measure, a powerful tribute to the man and his cause.

What did the left see? A fascist rally filled with hate.

A significant number of the largest left-wing influencers’ accounts found the Charlie Kirk memorial not only repulsive–I can understand that completely–but actually hateful and dangerous to the country.

One screen, two movies.

There is not one person who honestly believes that if Charlie were a liberal and assassinated, entire city centers would be boarded up in anticipation of riots. We know that because it has happened countless times in recent years. Instead, conservatives held candlelight vigils, prayer meetings, and peacefully organized.

We are not the same.

The thing is that liberals truly believe that they are the good ones, and talking about Jesus and saving our culture from forces that loudly proclaim that destroying it is their goal is fascist and dangerous. They see all that talk about Jesus and the importance of Western Civilizations as truly dangerous.

They equate words with harm, and far from reaching deep into their souls and finding the capacity to reach out in the face of actual violence, they go directly to armed conflict. They have declared war on God and are infuriated every time we reaffirm our faith. In a way, they are right that faith and commitment to Western ideals is an existential threat to them, because their own religion demands our destruction.

Doctors, lawyers, teachers, judges, and even elected officials celebrated Charlie’s death, and as they see us mourn him they see Nazis rallying.

Liberals are even declaring that Charlie’s assassination was the MAGA Reichstag fire–the Reichstag was set on fire by the Nazis themselves to generate rage and violence through creating a hoax. They are literally saying that MAGA killed Kirk as an excuse to terrorize liberals.

How do we come together when we live in two different realities? Honestly, I don’t know.

But what I do know is that Charlie’s assassination has sparked a revival of faith in God and faith in Western values, including the importance of trying to do so. And not only on the right, but for many in the center and the center left. The left will hate us no matter what, but we can marginalize them.

We expect too much if the goal is to persuade everyone. It never works that way. The worst parts of our souls are never eradicated, only subdued. Western Culture, as with every human society, has always had its enemies. What makes a culture is the Overton Window–the center around which most opinion coalesces and the extent to which respectable opinion stretches. Charlie, both in life and in death, moved the Overton Window.

It is too much to expect that people who have declared us an existential threat will grant even a bit of grace to us, and we have to be OK with that. They are right that we are enemies who are fighting for the soul of America, although very wrong about us being Nazis.

We don’t use Brownshirts to break windows, steal things, and beat people up.

But just as Christians recognize that the battle between good and evil is never fully won, we have to be satisfied with every temporary victory.

The two movies/one screen phenomenon is a result of the human condition. We can convince individuals one by one to see our movie and not the left’s, but at some level, we must accept that, at best, there will remain a rump group who refuse to see even the most obvious reality.

Such is life. We just have to make certain that the majority remain grounded in reality.
