‘Would have been a match against myself’

DANNY VAN TRIJP has withdrawn from the UK Open, claiming he is not “100 per cent ready” to compete.

The Dutch darter had qualified for the annual £750,000 tournament by finishing in the top eight of last year’s Challenge Tour.

But van Trijp, 29, will not be taking to the oche at Butlin’s Minehead due to personal reasons.

He wrote on social media: “Every darts player knows that you have to be able to give 100 per cent not only physically but also mentally at the board.

“Unfortunately, that’s not possible for me at the moment. It was a hard decision, but I think it will turn out to be a good one.

“I’m absolutely not someone who gives up, but if I had played now, it would ultimately have become a match against myself.”

In September 2024, he was involved in a serious car accident which he has been held legally responsible for.

“It’s something that has been going on for a very long time and that I’ve been dealing with for months,” he said.

“I hope the end of this month finally brings clarity and that this chapter can be closed.”

The UK Open is famed for its demanding open format and long playing days, which can drain competitors both physically and mentally.
