ANDY Burnham has reignited speculation of a return to Westminster, following the offer of a seat from a Labour MP, heaping more pressure on Sir Keir Starmer.
The Greater Manchester mayor refused to rule out a leadership bid after last week’s briefing turmoil and infighting at No 10.
Left-winger Clive Lewis offered up his Norwich seat amidst growing unease at Shabana Mahmood‘s “blue labour” immigration crackdown from Labour’s soft left.
This comes after last week’s blunder which saw the PM’s allies warn that any leadership bid would be quashed – and then point the finger straight at Wes Streeting, leading to more infighting.
Mr Burnham was grilled on the Today program, he said he “appreciated the support” and was “fully focused on my role as Mayor of Greater Manchester”.
The mayor did not categorically rule a bid for the top, and his speech this afternoon could be another chance to put pressure on the PM.
Should “the king of the north” be looking to make his move? And would he make a better PM than Sir Keir?
