THE world’s largest carmaker has recalled more than one million vehicles over a major flaw.
Toyota Motor is recalling 1.02 million vehicles in the United States due to a flaw that may cause a rear-view camera to fail, boosting the risk of a crash.
A software error may cause the camera image to freeze or go blank when the vehicle is in reverse, meaning the vehicles fail to comply with federal rear visibility requirements, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
Owners of recalled cars have been told to take them to their closest Toyota dealer, who will update the faulty parking assist software for free.
The recall covers certain 2022 through 2026 Toyota and Lexus model year vehicles.
Toyota-brand vehicles include the Land Cruiser, Camry Hybrid, Crown, Prius Prime, Sienna Hybrid, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Crown Signia, Prius PHEV, Highlander, Grand Highlander, RAV4 Prime, RAV4, bZ4X, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Mirai, Venza Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4 PHEV.
Lexus-brand vehicles include the RX PHEV, TX PHEV, LC, ES, TX Hybrid, LS, NX PHEV, GX, TX, NX Hybrid, RZ, RX Hybrid, LS Hybrid, ES Hybrid, LX, LX Hybrid, LC Hybrid, RX, and NX.
Model years for affected Toyota vehicles generally range from 2023 to 2026, while Lexus vehicles’ model years span 2022 to 2026. All affected vehicles are equipped with the PMV system.
Also involved is the 2023 to 2025 Subaru Solterra by nature of it being based on the same e-TNGA electric vehicle platform used by the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ.
VIN searches for affected vehicles are currently live on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s official website.
Automakers have recalled millions of vehicles in recent years over rear camera issues.
The cameras are mandatory to help prevent drivers from striking people or objects when backing up.
Last month, Toyota recalled nearly 394,000 US vehicles due to a rear-view camera issue that could reduce drivers’ visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
That recall covered several models, including certain 2022-2025 Tundra, Tundra Hybrid, and 2023-2025 Sequoia Hybrid vehicles.
Stellantis last year recalled nearly 1.2 million vehicles for rear camera problems.
Meanwhile, Ford has recalled 3.3 million vehicles for rear camera issues.

In July, Toyota recalled almost 70,000 vehicles over a faulty display screen that increased the risk of a crash.
Impacted vehicles were sold in the Australian market between July 2022 and April 2025.
It is understood that not all vehicles sold in this time frame feature the faulty displays.
But many, including the Corolla and Camry hybrids, the Kluger Hybrid and the RAV4 hybrid may experience the issue.
Toyota notified its customers that its 12.3 inch display screen on the instrument panel may be blank when the engine is turned on and remain in this state.
The screen is crucial for displaying warnings, indicator lights, vehicle gauges and messages.
How can I check if my car is part of a recall?
If you own a car that’s been recently recalled, you can easily check your VIN.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) makes it incredibly quick and easy for drivers to check and see if their vehicle is part of a recent (or past) recall.
The VIN checking tool also allows drivers to see whether or not the repair was completed within the last 15 years, making it an incredible tool for buyers of used cars.
All recalls initiated by the NHTSA mean free repairs for drivers, even if it’s an engine or a transmission replacement. If your VIN shows an active recall that has not been repaired, it’s important to make an appointment at your nearest dealership.
Here’s how to make an appointment for a recall:
- Look up your VIN using the NHTSA tool.
- Find out the recall number/ID from the manufacturer.
- Call your nearest dealership’s service center with the ID number handy, and mention you’d like to schedule an appointment to repair the recall. The repair can only be done at a dealership, as they’re authorized by the manufacturer to conduct the repair free of cost using genuine parts.
- Try to make the appointment as soon as possible.
- Once the repair is completed, the dealership will update the information associated with the VIN to reflect it’s been completed.
