Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield‘s family announced the tragic news of his death on social media.

His nephew posted on X: “Unfortunately with sad news my uncle Gary Mani Mounfield from the Stone Roses has sadly passed away today.

“Thinking of his twins and my uncle Greg at this sad time.

“He will be reunited in heaven with his lovely wife Imelda.

And Mani’s brother posted on Facebook: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother. Gary Mani Mounfield RIP.”

Bandmate Ian Brown posted on X: “Rest in Peace Mani.”

A source close to the family told The Sun that some of Mani’s former bandmates and closest friends, including Liam Gallagher, were told of his passing before the news broke.

They added: “Mani’s death has rocked everyone.

“Noel and Liam Gallagher were phoned before the news of his passing was made public.

“They’re on tour in South America and were informed by telephone.

“Likewise with the Stone Roses and Primal Scream.

“It’s an incredibly sad time and everyone is shocked.”

Mani is understood to have had a seizure at his home.

Who was Mani?

Gary “Mani” Mounfield was born on November 16, 1962, in Crumpsall, Greater Manchester.

He was an influential English rock bassist, best known for his membership in the seminal bands The Stone Roses and Primal Scream.

He left school at sixteen and joined The Stone Roses in 1987, becoming a pivotal part of the band’s sound that helped define the “Madchester” scene.

His distinctive bass lines were key to the psychedelic rock, dance music and indie pop fusion that made the band famous.

Legendary tracks featuring his work include She Bangs the Drums and I Am the Resurrection.

After The Stone Roses disbanded in 1996, Mani joined Primal Scream, whom he played for until 2011, before reuniting with The Roses for a reunion tour and to record new material.

Mani was a passionate supporter of Manchester United and remained proud of his roots throughout his life.

Who was Mani’s late wife Imelda?

Imelda Mounfield was Mani’s late wife.

She died aged 52 in November 2023, after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2020.

After her diagnosis, she and Mani hosted a number of charity events to raise funds for The Christie Hospital, The Stockport Charitable Trust and Maggie’s.

Imelda opened up about the support she received from different charities, saying: “Cancer affects not just the person who has it, but everyone around them, and I hope that by investing in some more research, we can help alleviate some of the devastation caused to families.”

Stone Roses guitarist John Squire and Liam Gallagher attended her funeral in Manchester.

She was a well-known and beloved figure in Manchester’s music and charity scenes.
