What’s really going with Justin Bieber & his vanishing pets? From baby monkey to wild cats amid fears for star’s health

FROM a monkey to a snake and far too many designer dogs, animal-mad superstar Justin Bieber always seems to have a pet or two on the go.

But as The Sun’s damning list reveals, the fate of the wide range of creatures who have become part of the millionaire’s family over the years hasn’t always been a happy one, and fans are beginning to speculate why.

Recently pictured hurling a water bottle at paparazzi when leaving a sushi restaurant in West Hollywood with his wife Hailey Bieber, troubled Grammy Award winner Justin has been sparking serious concerns for his welfare of late.

Justin, 32, and Hailey, 29, had their first child, a son called Jack Blues, in August 2024, and since then, we’ve seen plenty of erratic outbursts and bizarre social media posts from the superstar, not to mention an at times gaunt and dishevelled appearance.

With worries about Justin’s health escalating, the well-being of several of the pop star’s pets has been the subject of frequent speculation too, most notably amongst fans on popular discussion platform Reddit.

A Hollywood insider told us: “Justin’s revolving door of pets hasn’t gone unnoticed. No one fully understands what is going on with them all, but it’s no secret he’s had his struggles over the years, and questions have been raised about whether it has affected his ability to look after animals.

“He is, of course, a dad now, so things have settled down a lot – and in recent years, he seems to have made more sensible decisions regarding animals in the home.”

Commenting on his history with animals, a spokesperson for Peta told The Sun: “Animals don’t care if we have Grammys or Oscars – they just want to know and feel that they are loved, or at least respected and understood family members.

“Treating them like accessories to collect and things to discard causes them heartbreak and fuels the companion animal homelessness crisis.”

Back in September 2019, the Baby and Where Are U Now chart-topper spent a whopping $35,000 (£26,000) on two Savannah cats, the hybrid breed which crosses a domestic cat with a wild African Serval.

Banned in several states in the US, Savannahs are permitted in Justin’s home state of California, but while his purchase was legal, it was immediately criticised by animal welfare charity Peta, who accused the popstar of “fuelling the dangerous demand for hybrid cats”.

Justin hit back at Peta’s words in a typically immature fashion by telling the organisation to “suck it” and “go focus on real problems”.

Sushi and Tuna’s Instagram account quickly attracted 266,000 followers, but bizarrely, a flurry of cute pictures ended after a month, leading fans to speculate: what’s happened to the cats?

In March 2020, well-known US chef and author Sandra Lee gave a telling insight with an Instagram post recounting how she had found a starving, cold and exhausted Sushi “miles and miles” from his home.

Justin shared his joy at the return of his pet, who had been missing for three weeks, with his followers, saying: “he looks extremely skinny and has a very sad [meow], he is home now safe and sound.”

This happiness seemed to be short-lived however – Savannah cats can live for up to 20 years, but just a year later, Hailey let slip to Elle Magazine that the brother and sister had moved in with her cousin.

“The cats are amazing, but they are psycho,” said Hailey, seemingly surprised that her pets, who were descendants of wild African hunting cats, had been acting “half wild”.

“At one point, we had them in this room with a big sliding glass door,” added the make-up millionaire.

“We’re sitting in the kitchen, and we hear this giant thud, and we turn around, and one of the cats has jumped off the ground and is sprawled out like this [spreadeagled].

“[He clung to the glass] like Spider-Man.”

Sushi and Tuna haven’t been seen publicly since Hailey’s revelations.

Much to animal campaigning organisation Peta‘s chagrin, Justin is no stranger to adopting wild animals – back in 2013, the star got himself into hot water when he took his 20-month-old pet capuchin monkey Mally on tour to Germany.

Confiscated by officials at Munich Airport because he lacked the required vaccination and import documentation, Mally was quarantined and later sent to a zoo after Justin failed to claim back his pet and pay the $10,000 (£7,500) fees he had racked up.

Experts at the Munich shelter where Mally was cared for told The Sun they opposed the popstar keeping such a young monkey as a pet, saying capuchins liked to live in groups and should not be taken away from their mothers before they are a year old.

“Things get twisted,” said Justin said later, sounding somewhat unrepentant about abandoning Mally. “I had all the right papers.

“I even had it written out that he was a circus monkey and he could travel and all that s***.”

And at his Comedy Central roast in 2015, Bieber appeared to be reunited with missing Mally, telling the audience the monkey was “the love of his life” who he “owed an apology too”.

“It was someone I really loved and lost because I screwed it all up,” he said.

CREATURES ‘DISCARDED’

Little is known of what happened to Mally after that but it appears to have been a final appearance of the pair together.

Just a year earlier, Justin infamously gave away his hamster PAC to a fan.

After vowing to take his rodent to every meet and greet, the singer handed his pet’s cage to Tori McClure outside an arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

The California Hamster Association branded his impromptu gesture, which took place in December 2012, as animal cruelty, saying such a sudden environmental change could be enough to kill a hamster.

By March the following year, Tori revealed PAC was on its last legs, sharing a picture with the caption: “I just wish he could get better… He was OUR baby & @justinbieber I still can’t thank u enough.”

Earlier in 2012, 18-year-old Justin was busy auctioning off his pet snake, Johnson, the baby albino boa constrictor he brought to the 2011 MTV Video Awards, at a charity event.

The winning bidder was animal lover Michael Kronick, who later told E! News: “I found it really disgusting that celebrities like Bieber would stoop to a level of using living creatures as a fashion accessory and then so easily discard it.”

Kronick safely rehomed Johnson with the Reptile and Amphibian Discovery Zoo in Owatonna, Minnesota.

While Justin’s reckless behaviour with a monkey, cats, a snake and a hamster has caused controversy, it is his past history with adopting and discarding dogs that has seen him scrutinised the most by eagle-eyed followers.

Justin and his dad, Jeremy, got American bulldog puppy Karma for Christmas in 2013, and less than a year later, they were accused of abandoning her.

Dog trainer Trevor Dvernihuk said the dog, which was purchased in a pet store in Justin’s home city, Ontario, Canada, had been handed to him to be socialised, but was never picked up, nor was her upkeep paid for.

In an interview with TMZ at the time, Trevor even alleged Justin’s dad, Jeremy, had hurled Karma off a second-floor balcony, flying into a rage after she bit his younger brother Jaxon. Jeremy never commented on the incident.

Todd, the chow chow, had an equally short stay at the Bieber residence.

With his own Instagram account managed by Justin, the pup lasted a mere six months before the star gave him to one of his dancers, C.J.Salvador.

Salvador, 25, soon set up a fundraising page for his new seven-month-old pet, explaining: “Toddy is a seven-month-old chow chow born with a birth defect called ‘severe hip dysplasia’.

“Long story short, by the time he turns one, he won’t be able to walk, run, let alone play.”

Why is the dog’s millionaire former owner not footing the bill?’

Kindhearted supporters raised the $8,000 (£6,000) needed for surgery to secure Todd’s future, but many people asked themselves one simple question: ‘Why is the dog’s millionaire former owner not footing the bill?’
Bieber isn’t thought to have contributed a single cent to Todd’s surgery.

In 2019, the star announced on his social media that he had become a dog dad to a tiny teacup puppy.

“Meet our dogson, his name is #Oscar,” gushed Justin, sharing a cute snap of the Yorkshire Terrier who became part of the family back in 2018.

Oscar is one lucky pup – from his custom Louis Vuitton dog bag to matching outfits with his human dad, like any celebrity pet, he wants for nothing.

In 2022, Oscar was joined by a second Yorkshire Terrier, with Hailey telling her social media following: “This is Oscar’s new baby sister Piggy Lou Bieber”.

But back in 2015, Justin had welcomed another terrier called Esther into his family, with many articles in the media suggesting that becoming a pup dad would be the making of the then 21-year-old star, fast gaining a reputation for bad behaviour.

“I am in love,” Justin announced of Esther.

“She’s adorable… She’s a Silky Terrier… She makes me smile.”

Esther was allegedly rehomed soon after Oscar’s arrival in 2019, and her current whereabouts are thought to be unknown.

As for Justin, the star’s latest outburst earlier this month indicates he is showing no signs of growing up anytime soon.

This means there is always a risk that, just like Esther and countless creatures before her, Oscar and Piggy Lou could be in danger of being replaced by younger, cuter or more exotic pets.
