Richarlison, 28, ran to get the ball and get the game restarted quickly so Spurs could try and grab an equaliser.

But he ran into Ekitike who was grounded after trying to clear the ball off the line.

The Brazilian fell on top of the Frenchman and when trying to get up placed his hand on the back of his neck.

Richarlison then pressed down on the Liverpool man before running off leaving goalkeeper Alisson looking stunned.

During Sky Sports’ analysis of the match, Sturridge was left fuming by the former Everton man’s actions.

He said: “He is just doing something, why are you choking someone from the back?

“There is no need for it. There is absolutely no need.”

Co-pundit Jamie Redknapp was left unimpressed as he called the move a “chokehold”.

Richarlison proved to be a difficult customer even after full time as he was shown a yellow card for arguing with the referee.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Joe Hart also hit out at the striker’s actions on Match of the Day.

He said: “They manage to get themselves a goal, a really important goal.

“But just this bit of petulance.

“We just see it all the time when you don’t need to do that and you can get yourself a yellow card.

“Just get yourself back up and get back in the game.”

Ekitike had the last laugh over Richarlison as it was his goal that proved to be the difference.

Liverpool won the tie 2-1 in North London to help the reigning champions climb to fifth in the Premier League.

Arne Slot‘s side took the lead in perfect fashion as Florian Wirtz assisted Alexander Isak to fire home.

However, there was a major blow as the Swede was then forced off with an injury he suffered taking the shot.

Spurs were up against it for most of the match after midfielder Xavi Simons was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Virgil van Dijk.
