A bull is on the loose in Birmingham city centre with footage showing the animal rampaging through the streets.

The bull can be seen charging down the pavement before running into the road and towards a busy roundabout.

Footage shows traffic being brought to a stop on New Bond Street with police first being made aware at 9.30am.

Locals have taken to social media to share footage of the bull with officers seen running after the loose animal.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson told MailOnline at 12.30pm that the incident is ‘ongoing’ and is ‘currently being dealt with’.

Police said they first received reports of a bull in the road at 9.30am and would liaise with the council to ‘o ensure the animal is taken to a safe location’.

It is unclear where the bull escaped from. 

Bulls have been associated with since the practice of bull-baiting arose in the 16th Century, with the city’s main shopping centre named the Bullring.

Ozzy the bull was also the city’s mascot when it hosted the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Taking to Facebook, one person wrote: ‘What on earth is a bull doing in such a built up area.’

Another added: ‘Wow!!! Not something you see every day. Where on earth has it come from?’

A third person said: ‘Did the bullring statue come to life? Coz why is there a bull running around by St Andrews.’

A statement from West Midlands Police said: ‘We were made aware of a bull in the road near New Bond Street in Birmingham at just before 9.30am today,’ a statement from the force said.

‘We’re liaising with Birmingham City Council and other agencies to ensure the animal is taken to a safe location.’

Birmingham City Council confirmed at 1.10pm that the bull is ‘no longer on the loose’.
