Ahem. Does Kamala Harris think that the Department of Justice, which attempted to prosecute its main political opponent twice, was somehow ‘independent’? The same DoJ that imprisoned pro-life activists after raiding their houses at dawn? The same DoJ that claimed parents objecting to DEI and CRT policies at school board meetings could be domestic terrorists? The same DoJ that also thought that the traditional Latin Mass was another indicator of potential radical anti-government terrorism? How about snooping on Senate Republicans – was that the act of an “independent” Department of Justice?
Do tell.
Give Jimmy Kimmel at least one golf clap for asking this question at all. To my knowledge, he’s the first significant media figure to ask Harris why the Biden Regency spent four years sitting on these files, only to have Democrats take up the demand for full transparency when a Republican administration took over the DoJ. Harris managed to stammer out a semi-coherent word salad that suggested the current DoJ was too connected to the president to be trusted with the reveal of the Epstein files:
Kamala explains that the reason the Biden DoJ didn’t release the Epstein files is simply b/c the DoJ was so independent from the White House pic.twitter.com/7mJiJlljVN

Mediaite captured the moment as well:
Pressed on why the Biden administration itself did not push for disclosure while in office, particularly during an election cycle dominated by Trump, Harris acknowledged the political cost but insisted the separation was deliberate.
“To give you an answer that will not satisfy your curiosity, I will tell you, we, perhaps to our damage, but we strongly and rightly believed that there should be an absolute separation between what we wanted as an administration and what the Department of Justice did. We absolutely adhered to that and it was right to do that,” she replied.
She added: “The Justice Department would make its decisions independent of any political or personal vendetta or or concern that we may have and that’s the way it worked.”
Bwa-hahahahahahahahaha. That Kamala, she’s a kidder, all right! Perhaps it’s fitting that this moment took place on a failing comedy show, prompted by a question from a conspiracy theorist, and posed to an idiot who just dissipated whatever political capital she had left with her new memoir, 107 Days. This denouement of blame-shifting, or perhaps its nadir, took place in the most chef’s kiss perfect setting. Not even The View would have presented this in its properly stark comic relief.
In fact, this response makes Kimmel’s question even more acute. Why didn’t Democrats release the Epstein files during the four years of the Biden Regency? After all, it was the Trump DoJ that actually reopened the case in 2019, and which indicted both Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell for their sex-trafficking operations. Epstein took the coward’s way out, but the Trump DoJ led by William Barr prosecuted and convicted Maxwell and sent her to prison for 20 years.
If those files had any dirt on Trump and if the Barr-led DoJ was as corrupt as Harris claims, why would they have run that risk at all? They could have just as easily shrugged off the Epstein case by accepting the defense argument that Alex Acosta’s plea deal with Epstein was binding in all federal jurisdictions. The Trump DoJ at the time had to fight that argument in appeals before Epstein died and Maxwell finally got arrested after her attempt to disappear, in fact.
By the time Biden and Merrick Garland took power, the case against Maxwell had been gift-wrapped for them by Barr’s DoJ. Biden and Garland could have released the information now coming out at any time after Maxwell’s conviction in December 2021. So why didn’t they? It’s not because Garland and the Biden DoJ loved political independence; it’s because there’s nothing in those files that would have benefited them politically. There may not be anything in them that would have damaged them or other Democrats either; it’s almost certainly going to turn out to be a nothingburger in that sense.
Harris is now trying to muddy those waters by claiming that the DoJ now will hide material to protect Trump. First off, that’s not going to be possible, given the nature of grand-jury material and its oversight by the courts. Federal judges will almost certainly get involved over the redactions necessary to protect victims in the Epstein trafficking case. But even then, the fact that Garland and Biden sat on these files for four years tells us all we need to know about Harris’ ridiculous attempt to generate more conspiracy-theory nonsense around the Epstein dumpster fire. And in that sense, Harris chose the perfect show on which to launch that incoherent campaign.
Addendum: Maybe Axios has evidence of why Democrats didn’t push to expose the Epstein files:
- Nothing in the pictures indicate where the photos were taken or who is in them.
- The Democrats released dozens of photos, which include heavily redacted passports from Ukraine, Czech Republic and Russia, plus a prescription for the urinary tract infection medication Phenazopyridine.
- Bill Gates is also in some of the photos, as is Google co-founder Sergey Brin and academic Noam Chomsky.
Does anyone think Democrats would have willingly exposed Gates, Brin, and Chomsky before they deicded to go full demagogue this year?
