Wayne Rooney ready to sensationally join Man Utd as coach

WAYNE ROONEY has backed Michael Carrick to “bring the spirit of Manchester United back.”

The Red Devils were last night closing on a deal for Carrick, 44, to take over as caretaker boss.

And pal Rooney, the club’s 253-goal record scorer, wants to be part of his coaching staff.

He said: “The club has lost its identity, it’s lost that family feel, if you like.”

“This is an opportunity to bring that back, bring the spirit of Manchester United back to the club.”

Asked if he would fancy working with his old United team-mate if Carrick joins until the summer, Roo added: “Of course, it’s a no-brainer.

“I’m not begging for a job here. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would.”

United also spoke to their former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Saturday but Carrick was the front-runner by then.

Jonathan Woodgate is in the frame for a coaching role, having been Carrick’s No2 at Middlesbrough.

Rooney, 40, added: “Michael is a very clever person.

“He knows the club, he’d be a great fit.”

Carrick, who took charge of three games when Solskjaer was sacked in 2021, is expected to take his first training session tomorrow.
