TWO new Covid strains sweeping Britain have sparked a surge in cases.
They are thought to be behind a 60 per cent rise in hospital admissions.
XFG, called Stratus, and NB.1.8.1, known as Nimbus, are now the most common variants.
The UK Health Security Agency estimates 63 per cent of cases are one of two Stratus variants, which first emerged at the start of the year.
A further 11 per cent are thought to be caused by Nimbus, with the rest older variants.
Symptoms include a sore throat and hoarse voice.
Officials said the fresh variants do not appear any more dangerous but genetic changes mean people may have less immunity to infection.
Free vaccines are available from today for the over-75s, people with weak immune systems and pregnant women.
Dr Amanda Doyle, of NHS England, said: “It’s concerning to hear flu and Covid-19 cases are already creeping up ahead of winter – but vaccinations remain our best defence.”
Typical symptoms of Covid are still similar to a cold or flu, with coughs and sniffles, fever, aches and tiredness all common.
The NHS advises people to rest at home if they feel rough with any of the viruses, to prevent their spread and speed up recovery.
