Warning for drivers as busiest motorway in UK to close overnight for a week

MOTORISTS on the UK’s busiest motorway face a week of late-night disruption as major roadworks force a string of junction closures.

National Highways said a series of overnight shutdowns on the M25 will begin tonight, March 16.

The works will run nightly from 10pm until around 5.30am, finishing on Friday morning, March 20.

Carriageways, slip roads and link roads at several key points around the motorway will be closed while crews carry out the work.

On Monday night the clockwise ring road will shut between junctions 8 and 9, with the junction 8 clockwise entry slip road also closed.

Motorists heading for the M4 motorway are warned to expect delays as the clockwise link road at junction 15 shuts.

The anticlockwise carriageway on London’s orbital will be closed further west between junctions 13 and 12.

Other closures include entry and exit slip roads, the junction 29 slips and the junction 25 “up-and-over” road.

Junction 21A’s clockwise entry slip and anticlockwise exit slip will also be shut, near the M1 motorway interchange.

Later in the week, many of the same closures will be reinstated, including between junctions 8 and 9, and the junction 17 slip road overnight on Tuesday.

On Wednesday night, the closure will switch to the anticlockwise carriageway between junctions 9 and 8.

On the clockwise side, the junction 13 roundabout and the A308 link road will also be closed.

National Highways said junctions 21A and 25 will remain shut for another night.

On Thursday night, a fresh shutdown will also see the clockwise side of the M25 motorway closed between junctions 16 and 17.

The link road from junction 15 to the M4 motorway at junction 4B will also remain shut as the week of works wraps up.

Most closures are expected to lift between around 5am and 6am, meaning daytime traffic on the M25 should be largely unaffected.

Drivers travelling overnight or in the early hours are urged to follow signed diversion routes and check live updates on Traffic England before setting off.
