A THUG already serving life for a brutal murder repeatedly stabbed a prison guard with a makeshift shank in a horrendous attack inside jail.

Christopher Stubbs, 30, acted “like a rabid dog” when he stabbed the officer multiple times at Garth Prison in Lancashire.

The violent killer, originally from South Bank, was jailed for life after the “targeted and planned” fatal shooting of 22-year-old Lee Pettite in 2016.

The 30-year-old became violent at the high-security facility on July 14 last year.

Following morning unlock, Stubbs used a self-made hook shank to stab the officer multiple times, leaving him with three deep puncture wounds to his torso and abdomen.

He also struck the officer in the head and, described as behaving like a “rabid dog,” bit another officer during the attack.

BATTLE OF THE BEASTS

Stephen Lawrence’s killer and Manchester Arena bomber clash in prison

A dramatic struggle ensued, requiring several prison officers to restrain and subdue the vicious inmate.

Stubbs was seen emerging from his cell in an agitated state before launching the attack, which took place in front of other inmates on the prison wing.

At Preston Crown Court on December 18, Stubbs was found guilty of Section 18 wounding with intent to cause grievous harm, assault on an emergency worker, and possession of a sharp article in prison.

He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, comprising of 11-and-a-half years for the wounding charge, six months consecutively for biting the officer, and 12 months concurrently for possessing the weapon.

This new sentence will run consecutively to the 24-year minimum term for murder that Stubbs received for the death of Lee Pettite nine years ago.

The murder took place after Stubbs, along with two accomplices, chased Pettite before shooting him in the back in a “targeted and planned” attack in Eston, Teesside.

Although Stubbs refused to appear in court for sentencing, the judge handed down the sentence in his absence.

The thug, formerly from Teesside, will now serve a total of at least 36 years behind bars for his murder conviction and the attack on the prison officer.

In the background of this violent outburst, the murder of Lee Pettite remains a key chapter in Stubbs’ troubled life.

Lee Pettite was found on a street in Teesside on March 1, 2016, after being chased by three men, and shot in the back by Stubbs.

His role in the killing, as the “instigator” who shot Pettite in the back, saw him sentenced to a minimum of 24 years.

His time will now be extended by the new prison sentence, ensuring he will face a lengthy period behind bars for his crimes.

Detective constable Paul Brown, of Skelmersdale CID, said: “This was a shocking and abhorrent attack on a prison officer by a serving inmate using a vicious self-made weapon.

“The judge hearing the case acknowledged the danger that prison officers face in doing their duty and the bravery they show when dealing with violent prisoners.

“It took several prison officers to restrain Stubbs, and the judge described him as acting like a rabid dog in trying to bite them.

“The length of the sentence imposed which was ordered to run consecutively to his tariff for the life sentence, shows the seriousness of the case.

“Stubbs is a violent and dangerous individual.”
