A VLOGGER has wowed followers with a savvy hack how to stay in cities for a fraction of the price – in a very unconventional way.
Courtney Lynn Hunter, from Dallas, has shared her tips on how to roam safely and without breaking the bank – by staying in a convent.
The architectural designer explains how she travels to different cities – most recently Italy’s Rome – by staying in religious communities.
The travel enthusiast wrote alongside her video: “If I joined the convent, would you be surprised?
“Try monasterystays.com or monasteries.com or just search for a convent in the city you’re visiting.”
In the video clip, she can be seen with her mum exploring the Italian city and takes us through her surprising accommodation choice.
The voiceover explains: “Americans have a reputation as bad tourists, so here’s my favourite travel hack to be a more responsible guest wherever I’m traveling.
“Instead of booking an Airbnb, try staying at a convent. Airbnb may have started as a platform to help connect frugal travellers with a guest bed or couch, but now it’s more often used to rent out someone’s third or fourth house for extra income.”
She continues: “This has led to an increased burden on a local housing market, especially in the more touristy places. If hotels in your destination city are out of your price range, check out the local convents or monasteries.
“They are often located in the most beautiful neighbourhoods, conveniently close to tourist destinations and the room usually includes the typical Bed and Breakfast amenities.
“The only issue you might have is that most have a curfew. They seem to have their original locks and you have to drop off and pick up your key at the front desk when leaving or returning, which, honestly, I think is ideal.
“There are a few different platforms to book your trip, but you might be able to call them directly if you prefer.
“My mum and I stayed at three different places while in Italy and would highly recommend it.”
Impressed users commented: “Wow! I didn’t even know this was a thing. As a solo traveler, this would make me feel so comfortable. Thanks for sharing.”
“I usually stay at hostels when I travel solo but this is the first time I’ve heard of staying at a convent… thank you for sharing!” applauded a second.
A third amazed user added: “You’re telling me I can stay in a CONVENT while travelling?! Low key want to travel somewhere now just for that experience.”
Other in-the-know followers agreed: “I’ve stayed at both convents and monasteries in Italy. They are really great safe spaces for women travellers.”
A second savvy traveller added: “I love convent stays! They’re always in the best locations and they have pretty much the same amenities as a hotel (breakfast, bathroom, towels, hairdryer etc.) but for a lot less.
“And compared to a lot of hotels they are often very quiet. As a female solo traveler this is the way to go! I’ve also been to convents with couples in my party and we have never had anyone be turned away.”
A third penned: “Great idea! Airbnb has ruined a lot of cities and even European towns.”
