Two rally drivers escape lions after Land Rover gets stuck in mud in Africa

TWO rally drivers had a lucky escape when their Land Rover got stuck in mud in Africa — and they stumbled into lions.

Students Jack Pierce-Jones and Joe Burr abandoned their 4×4 and were walking towards a village in the dark when they saw paw prints.

Jack, 22, said: “My first reaction was ‘S***, that’s a lion’.

“I shone our torch and its eyes reflected back.

“It was a female with a cub, 30 feet away.

“We turned around, didn’t say a word and walked away fast.”

They returned to their car and slept in the Botswana salt pan, waking covered in scorpions.

They and the 4×4 were rescued by passing wildlife rangers but they later wrecked their vehicle in a pothole.

They had to hitch a lift to finish the 2,800-mile Africa Rally in Kenya.

Jack, of Caernarfon, Gwynedd, said: “It was a great adventure.”
