The secret struggles of Rory McIlroy‘s wife, Erica Stoll, have been laid bare in a revealing new book about the life of the Masters champion.
The widely respected Alan Shipnuck’s ‘Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar’ reveals how Stoll became a ‘neo-Elin’ – a reference to Tiger Woods‘ first wife, Elin Nordegren, who Woods admitted cheating on throughout his rise to the top of the game.
While accusations of that extent have never been leveled at McIlroy, the couple nearly divorced in May 2024 amid rumors McIlroy was seeing golf reporter Amanda Balionis.
The storm contributed to Erica repeatedly declining to do interviews or visiting McIlroy on tour, instead staying at home with their daughter, Poppy, the book says.
It was the Daily Mail who first reported the links between McIlroy and Balionis. Shipnuck’s book says that people close to McIlroy and Balionis insist they were never romantically involved but that when he started researching for his book, 90 percent of questions he was asked were about the pair.
The Daily Mail report about McIlroy claimed that his friendship with Balionis had become the ‘talk of the links’.

In an interview between the pair in May 2024, after he won the Wells Fargo Championship in Quail Hollow, North Carolina, they were both laughing and flirting with each other.
Balionis asked McIlroy to explain ‘physically how good your game feels’. And McIlroy told Balionis that at the moment ‘it feels like the stars are aligning.’
The next day, it emerged McIIroy wanted a divorce. He and Erica had been together for seven years when McIlroy shocked the golfing world by filing for the split in Palm Beach County, Florida, saying his marriage was ‘irretrievably broken’.
But just one month later the pair announced they had decided to stay together.
In a statement at the time, McIlroy said that ‘Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together’.
McIlroy later called the episode a ‘wake-up call’.
Shipnuck draws parallels between McIlroy and Woods, whose multiple affairs were exposed in 2009 after he crashed his car into a fire hydrant outside his home during Thanksgiving weekend.
Nordegren divorced him as the former World No.1’s reputation dramatically unraveled. Almost 20 years on, in rehab in Switzerland after his latest car crash, the fight to rebuild his name is ongoing for Woods.

As for McIlroy, Shipnuck writes: ‘It didn’t help that Erica had become a neo-Elin Woods, never doing any interviews and remaining unknown to the golf public’.
While McIlroy would, for the most part, talk openly to the press and enjoyed chatting with other golfers, Stoll would often remain at home with Poppy and not come on the tours.
‘That there were rumors about McIlroy’s love life wasn’t totally surprising given his ribald streak’, Shipnuck writes.
That included trips to Ibiza with his guy friends and once joking on a podcast that he would most like to trade places with a famous stallion called Galileo.
According to his close friend Shane Lowry, 2023 was a ‘tough spot’ for McIlroy and golf was a refuge for him – until the divorce filing.
In the book, victorious Europe Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley says: ‘It can’t be easy being Rory’s wife. I’m sure it’s not easy for her because she’s quiet by nature’.
In an extraordinary statement, McGinley then added: ‘Caroline Harrington (Padraig Harrington’s wife) would have been perfect as Rory’s wife.
‘She (Caroline) loves Padraig being a professional golfer more than Padraig loves being a professional golfer.

‘But Erica is quiet and she kind of keeps her thoughts to herself. She’s had to find where she fits in and where she doesn’t.’
McGinley said that while McIlroy is a ‘superstar’ and has a ‘big personality’, Stoll was not like that at all.
Still, Shipnuck does offer a withering verdict on McIlroy’s brief separation from his wife.
He writes: ‘The short-lived divorce proceedings and hasty reconciliation said more about him than her.
‘If you are an internationally famous athlete heading toward becoming a billionaire, it is probably unwise to file for divorce unless you are one million percent certain there is zero chance to save the marriage.
‘But McIlroy’s life has been defined by impetuousness, on the golf course and in matters of business and romance.
‘The recklessness is part of what makes him appealing’.
In the book golfer Lee Westwood puts it more bluntly and calls McIlroy a ‘f***ing drama queen’.

McIlroy and Stoll had married in 2017 in a star-studded ceremony at Ashford Castle in County Mayo, Ireland where guests included Stevie Wonder.
Stoll had been working for the PGA of America when she met McIlroy in 2012 at the Ryder Cup, where she got him a police escort to his tee because he was late.
The story pumped out to the media that week surrounded a confusion over time zones and tee times, but the whispers among staffers was something altogether more salacious.
‘He was throwing every ounce of game he had at Erica’, one employee told Shipnuck in the book. ‘It was not subtle. It became a running joke among a few of us: Has Rory closed the deal yet?’
There is no proof that McIlroy was unfaithful to Wozniacki that weekend, but group chats between staffers were full of ‘winking emojis’ and brazen comments about the ‘smitten’ golfing superstar.
McIlroy later got engaged to tennis star Wozniacki, on New Year’s Eve in 2013, before they broke off their relationship before the wedding, and McIlroy started officially dating Stoll a few months later.

They initially kept their love life a secret, eventually going public in 2015.
This week, for the first time in his storied career, McIlroy arrives at Augusta National as a champion instead of facing an endless stream of questions asking if this is the year he conquers his Masters demons.
Erica and Poppy will almost certainly join him for the traditional par-three contest on the Wednesday, under the glare of the world’s sporting media.
But from there, once the tournament begins, she will most likely return to the background, where she’s most comfortable.
