Tributes to ‘devoted’ father, 37, who died in house fire – as second man arrested

The family of a ‘devoted’ father who died in a horror house fire have paid tribute.

Emergency services raced to the blaze at a property in Highters Heath, Birmingham, just before 1.10am on Friday.

Daniel Gardner, 37, was found badly injured and taken to hospital for treatment but tragically died a short time later.

Stephen Dale, 47, from Birmingham, appeared in court charged yesterday charged with murdering Mr Gardner.

He has been remanded in custody ahead of another hearing today, West Midlands Police said.

Police have also arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.

Daniel’s family, who are being supported by specialist officers, paid tribute to him in a statement: ‘Daniel, devoted son, daddy, brother, and nephew. Words cannot describe the unbearable pain and devastation we all feel.

‘You gave everything and never expected anything in return.
