A PUB reputed to be one of the toughest in Britain is up for sale for less than £140,000.
The Wyndham Arms is notorious for being the haunt of boxers, tough ex-miners and steelworkers.
Auctioneers merely describe it as “lively” but older regulars at the boozer in Merthyr Tydfil in the South Wales Valleys had a reputation for not being afraid of having a scrap.
It featured in a TV series about Britain’s hardest pubs.
And residents said strangers from other parts of Wales who would turn up there for a pint “would not stop long”.
One said: “They’re either carried out or they’re knocked out.”
It was closed after becoming a den for shoplifters to sell stolen steaks and booze.
And now the end-of-parade property, with a flat above, is listed for sale with a guide price of £138,000.
Auctioneer Paul Fosh said: “The lively pub occupies a prominent corner position close to Merthyr Tydfil town centre.”
Police had issued previous landlord Kevin Jones with a warning notice over the stolen goods racket.
Licensing chiefs accepted police evidence that for years the pub had been central to the shoplifting racket blighting retailers in the town.
CCTV showed patrons handling whiskey stolen from Tesco before one customer made a purchase of three bottles.
A second example in October last year featured CCTV of a man outside the pub selling steaks stolen from a nearby Iceland supermarket.
