A FOOTIE ace’s bank account was used to pay the hitman who killed gangster Marc Webley.

East Kilbride forward John Robertson’s thug brother Gary, 22, used his star sibling’s details to funnel £300 to assassin Grant Hunter, 34, the High Court in Edinburgh heard.

But the League Two star, 24, was unaware of the link to the Hogmanay 2023 execution outside the Anchor Inn in Granton, Edinburgh.

John Robertson accused prosecutors of “lying” after his bank account was linked to the notorious gangland hit orchestrated by his brother.

The former St Johnstone forward told The Scottish Sun: “They’ve f**ked the narrative, it’s a lie. The High Court must be lying as well.”

Chilling CCTV footage showed the gunman removing his hood and balaclava as he approached Webley, 38, outside the Anchor Inn in Granton, Edinburgh, as the dad of two celebrated Hogmanay 2023.

Hunter fired five shots at Webley and his pal Stewart Pearson.

He survived but Webley was pronounced dead early on January 1 at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The High Court in the capital heard that three days later Gary Robertson used his brother’s account and a third party to disguise the flow of money.

Prosecutors today confirmed there was “never any suggestion” John knew the cash transfer was intended to pay Hunter for the execution.

Advocate depute Graeme Jessop told the court: “On January 4, 2024, Gary Robertson arranged for the transfer of £300 using his brother’s bank account to the occupier of a flat at Gorgie Road.

“The occupier then withdrew the money from an ATM and passed the money to Grant Hunter.”

It came as Hunter and girlfriend Emma McVie, 27, were said to have bounced around pads in the capital as cops launched a probe into the killing.

Gary Robertson got rid of the gun and gave Hunter clothes, cash and cocaine.

The hitman laughed as he was jailed for 26 years last month after Judge Lord Mulholland blasted the “Chicago”-style slaying.

McVie got four and a half years for cleaning the getaway car.

Robertson, of the capital’s Niddrie, landed six and a half years.

Pictures showed him arm in arm with his brother who is rated one of Scottish League Two’s top talents with 11 league goals so far this season.

He has never said where the money came from for the contract killing.

And the Crown Office said: “There was never any suggestion that Gary Robertson’s brother had any knowledge of the purpose of the transfer by Gary Robertson of the funds”.

His club declined to comment.

But mum Gemma Devlin said: “My son, as a professional footballer, would never get involved in anything like this.”

We told how Webley had been wearing a stabproof vest on the night he died.

In the weeks before his slaying he posted videos urging his gangland rivals to come after him and hinted that he was carrying a firearm.

The drug dealer had issued the taunts in crazed Snapchat videos as his fury grew over another hood hooking up with ex-Jodie Steele, the mum of his two sons.

The barbs were aimed at the hood and caged Edinburgh drugs kingpin Mark Richardson, 39.
