A two-year-old girl tragically drowned in a bucket of water at her home in Brazil on Christmas Eve.
Isabele Louise de Sousa Silva was unable to climb out after falling head first into the pail at her family’s house in São João da Canabrava, in the northeastern state of Piauí.
Her mother, who had been washing clothes in an outdoor laundry area, originally could not find her before spotting the toddler’s near lifeless body in the bucket.
Neighbours rushed to help the mother resuscitate the child while the emergency services were called.
The girl, who would have turned three in January, was taken to a local health centre to receive first aid before being transferred to a medical unit in the nearby town of Bocaina, where she died.
Police are treating the death as a domestic accident and the toddler’s body has been sent to the Justino Luz Regional Hospital in Picos to determine the exact cause of death.
Sergeant Franco, from São João da Canabrava Police, told Globo: ‘The mother was outside the house, in the laundry room, washing some clothes, when she noticed the child was missing.
‘Searching the house, she couldn’t find her, eventually locating her inside the bathroom, practically drowned.

‘In despair, the mother pulled the nearly lifeless child out and called for help from the neighbours.’
Isabele’s mother worked at a local school, which her daughter attended, and the Municipal Department of Education has released a statement expressing its sadness at the death of the girl.
The tragedy came just days after the shocking death of another Brazilian two-year-old girl who was attacked by piranhas after falling into a river.
Clara Vitoria had been wandering outside her riverside home, which had no fence to prevent her from falling into the water, when the incident occurred.
She died shortly after the attack, near the city of Coari, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, on Monday.
Clara reportedly fell into the river through a hole in a floating structure where she lived with her family.
Her parents only realised something was wrong after noticing she had disappeared.
They entered the river to search for her and found her around five minutes later. She was rescued from the water but no longer showed signs of life.
The girl, who would have turned three in January, was taken to a medical centre in the nearby town of Bocaina, where she died.
Most of her injuries were to her neck and were caused by the piranha attack.
The area where she fell had no fencing or guardrails because it had been set aside for the future construction of a bathroom.
Her body was taken to the Legal Medical Institute for forensic procedures and the case was registered with police.
