Thursday’s Final Word – HotAir

Closing the tabs

Ed: Absolute heroics from our friends in New Zealand. Thank you so much for risking your lives to rescue Americans in one of the most difficult terrains on Earth.

SpikedAustralian trans activist Roxanne Tickle is as likely to get pregnant as the late Dame Edna Everage. This isn’t a jab at his dating prospects – it’s simply an acknowledgement that he’s a man. Yet Australia’s sex discrimination commissioner, Anna Cody, has in effect told a court that Tickle is perfectly capable of giving birth. In fact, Cody has argued that Australia’s pregnancy-protection laws should cover Tickle – and any other man who declares himself a woman.

This outbreak of lunacy comes courtesy of the most recent instalment of the Tickle vs Giggle saga. Last year, a court in Australia ruled that it was unlawful to exclude Tickle from a women‑only networking app called Giggle. The court heard that Tickle, who had gender-reassignment surgery in 2017, ‘feels in her mind psychologically that she is a woman’. In a now notorious judgement, Justice Robert Bromwich confirmed Tickle’s beliefs, finding that ‘sex is not confined to being a biological concept’ and therefore ‘can be changed’. Sall Grover, the app’s founder, was ordered to pay $50,000 in legal fees and an extra $10,000 in damages to Tickle. Grover’s appeal against last year’s ruling began in the Federal Court in Sydney this week.

Ed: Maybe the New Zealanders can have a chat with the Aussies. Or maybe we need to have some chats among ourselves, as this entry shows …

Ed: I agree — that’s a gross thing to do, and it should be stopped. Someone on Twitter likened it to tossing octopi on the ice in hockey to celebrate hat tricks, which is also gross, but there’s no chance that the octopi had once been inside someone before tossing it into a public event. HOWEVER. If we’re going to be concerned about making women and girls uncomfortable and diminishing their place in sports places, let’s talk about forcing women and girls to share locker spaces and competition spaces with boys and men. Mmm-kay?

NYTimesPresident Trump is expected to sign a memorandum on Thursday requiring colleges to submit admissions data to the federal government to verify compliance with a 2023 Supreme Court decision that ended race-conscious policies, according to a senior White House official.

The presidential action also requires Linda McMahon, the education secretary, to increase the number of accuracy checks on the data provided by the schools and to take action against universities that submit untimely or inaccurate information.

The memorandum will also require the Education Department to revamp its process for collecting higher education data, known as the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, which includes details about admissions, enrollment and financial aid. That information will be made more accessible to the public, according to a fact sheet.

Ed: It should get published in monthly reports, with rankings for all schools receiving federal funds. Linda McMahon or her spokesperson should hold a presser every time the report goes public. If you want to end this kind of nonsense, name ’em & shame ’em. That’s the quickest way to compliance.

Ed: This method works too, at least as a start. But why not try both?

Politico: The $584 million dollars in frozen funds that UCLA officials announced Wednesday is the first official tally of what is at stake for the school. The sum is far more than what was initially estimated when the Department of Justice announced last week it was investigating the school for violations of civil rights laws stemming from allegations it has failed to protect Jewish students and faculty from antisemitism.

In a school-wide letter sent Wednesday morning and shared with POLITICO, UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk confirmed the grant money, which is meant to fund hundreds of research projects in a wide array of fields, is “suspended and at risk.”

“If these funds remain suspended,” he wrote, “it will be devastating for UCLA and for Americans across the nation.”

Ed: Well, almost entirely for UCLA, really. Other schools that comply with the law, don’t discriminate in admissions and hiring, and don’t let Jews get targeted by radicals on their campuses will get those grants and research projects. If UCLA thinks that this is devastating, then they have some choices to make, don’t they?

Ed: I’m more with Moore on this. The data from BLS has grown less and less reliable over the years, which seems more likely to be a competency issue than anything else. Hanlon’s Razor advises to never assign to malice that which can be fully explained by incompetence (paraphrased), and I believe that applies here. But that then also means that you have to fix the competence issues, and in government, that usually means bringing in fresh leadership at the top.

NY Post: TikTok is sucking it up — literally — with videos of American adults pacifying themselves in traffic, at work, or in the throes of burnout.

In the comments section of a TikTok by @thebentist, one user swore, “I just use an adult pacifier it hasn’t moved my teeth been using them for 4 years.”

Another doubled down: “Just get an adult pacifier I use one! And the ADHD tip it works!!(for me).”

Others admitted, “we gotta do what we gotta do to keep focused. over bite or not getting stuff we need to get done. Lol,” while one confessed, “im so ashamed, I’ve been addicted for 23 years, my entire life.”

Ed: YGBFKM. If I recall correctly, this was a street-gang thing years ago, but perhaps I’m misremembering that. If you need a pacifier to deal with life as an adult, well … seriously, what is there to say, other than pick out your nursing home now and find adult supervision for the rest of your life? Or at least get off my damn lawn and turn down your radios, you babies.

Ed: Hence my VIP column today about Argument Clinic Democrats. It applies even more to progressives in the Eurozone, and for that matter, Australia (see above).

NY Post: But three sources who have worked with or for Crockett say she’s rarely present when TV cameras aren’t rolling — and terrorizes staff when she does appear.

Crockett is not often found at her government-provided suite in the Longworth House Office Building, with one insider saying she prefers to work from her nearby luxury apartment building, sometimes for weeks on end.

“She is laying around her apartment, won’t come into the office, and is really just indifferent to staff and will scream at them,” the former aide said. …

“You’re technically allowed to do this but it’s wildly inefficient. Instead of using the scheduler’s car, she rents a car every week in DC,” one source said.

“She expects her staff to drive her around while she’s in the back seat,” they added, calling it a “power play” akin to “treating the staffer like an Uber driver.”

Ed: John wrote about this earlier too, but I couldn’t pass on it for the Final Word. I am absolutely unsurprised that Crockett turns out to be an entitled dilettante, but the Texas Democrats she helped turn into fleebaggers might want to take another look at her. She is the one who gave them the legal advice to convince them they could get away with obstructing a legislative session. Wanna bet she never even cracked a case-law book before giving that advice?

Ed: I simply could not leave this out of tonight’s Final Word. Imagine being so narcissistic that you spend a long time waiting to access one of the most amazing architectural and religious places in the world, only to obsess over your own TikTok dance ‘career’ with this absurd and disrespectful display. But the riposte from David Deavel is simply *chef’s kiss* perfect.
