REDUNDANCY numbers have surged, leaving plenty of us searching for work.
If you lost your job — or just fancy a new career — knowing how to look for openings, and apply, is key.
Here are some tips . . .
JOBS CHECKLIST: Don’t hunt only for a version of the job you have always done, says Helen Tupper, of career website amazingif.com and co- author of Squiggly Careers.
Instead, think what inspires you the most.
Helen says: “Create a target list of companies you’d like to work for. Go on their websites, look at what roles are advertised, and use places like LinkedIn to see who you might know that works in those companies.”

BEST CV: The first thing that recruiters see is your CV and it’s your chance to show off your skills and why your experience suits the role. But it needs to be succinct and easy to read.
Write a summary at the top to give the employer a taste of what you offer.
Tailor your CV to each role you apply for, with clear points that show you are suitable for the job described.
Helen says: “With today’s AI searches, it’s really important that you include keywords in your application that are specific to the job, to make sure that it gets through the filter and gets you to an interview.”
If you struggle with writing, try using AI platforms such as ChatGPT to help you check for grammar and summarise your experience.
INTERVIEW: Do as much research as possible on the company that you’re interviewing with, ahead of the meeting.
The charity Smart Works offers unemployed women coaching and smart clothing for interviews.
There are 11 centres across the UK, and you can get referrals through your local job centre.
Suited And Booted is a charity that offers interview clothing for low-income men.
Timpson offers free dry-cleaning to jobless people sprucing up for interview.
