BODY Coach Joe Wicks recently lifted the lid on what really goes into ultra- processed protein bars.
Aside from potential health issues, these snacks don’t come cheap.
Save yourself a heap of cash by making your own muscle-boosting snacks from natural ingredients.
Here’s how . . .
PROTEIN BITES: You’ll need just 12 minutes to whip up these protein balls using a recipe from Tesco Real Food.
Melt a tablespoon of coconut oil in a heatproof bowl over a pot of hot water. Take off the heat and add two tablespoons each of tahini and honey.

Then mix in 30g of pecans and 20g of dates, all finely chopped, plus 70g of almond butter, one tablespoon of chia seeds, 30g of sesame seeds and a teaspoon of cinnamon.
Pop the bowl in the fridge for around half an hour until firm, then use your hands to roll into eight bite-size balls, which you can store in the fridge.
PEANUT BUTTER BARS: Create a batch of these easy snacks using a Joe Wicks’ recipe. Soak 130g of pitted Medjool dates for around 15 minutes in warm water.
Drain the dates and blitz in a blender with 250g of peanut butter and 45g of rolled oats until the mixture comes together. Stir in 60g of unsalted peanuts.
Press the mixture into a baking tin lined with baking paper, then pour over 130g of dark melted chocolate. Put in the fridge for an hour and when set, cut into equal sized bars.
PROTEIN FLAPJACKS: Get kids involved in making these tasty flapjacks, from a recipe on the BBC Good Food website.
Beat 100g of crunchy peanut butter with four egg whites and two tablespoons of maple syrup. Stir in 200g of oats, 25g of raisins and 50g of pumpkin seeds.
Press the mix into a well-oiled non-stick tin and bake for around 15 minutes. Cut into 12 rectangles and leave to cool. Keep in an airtight container for up to a week.
