A CONTESTANT on The Wheel won a staggering jackpot despite a tricky sports question – but would you have known it?

The hit BBC One show returned last Saturday for its sixth series with Michael McIntyre once again presiding over events.

Celebrity guests included Katherine Ryan, Leyton Williams and Roman Kemp, who all did their best to help the players make it through the questions and to the final.

In the end, it was 55-year-old lollipop lady Sally from Gateshead who had the chance to play for the big money.

She was paired with Celebrity Traitors star Joe Marler, who had finished bottom of the table among the celebrities after getting the least amount of questions right during the show.

But that meant Sally had opted to go for the highest amount by choosing Joe, and one question stood between her and a whopping £110,000.

flat note

The Wheel fans fume as player fumbles musical question – would you have got it?

That question was a sports one, but sadly not about rugby.

Instead, it was: “The Welsh athlete Jade Jones has won two Olympic gold medals in which martial art?”

The four options were then: “Kickboxing, Judo, Taekwondo or Karate.”

Sally immediately whittled it down to Taekwondo or Judo, as she remembered seeing “a girl winning medals for kicking”.

Joe agreed these were the two answers that jumped out to him, but as their 30 seconds of debating time ticked down, he told Sally to go with her “eyes and gut”.

In the end, Sally opted for Taekwondo, but immediately held her hands to her face and fretted that she was wrong, and it was actually Judo.

After a tense pause, the studio lit up and it was revealed Sally had guessed correctly, and had pocketed one of the biggest jackpots in the show’s history.

The result was even more special, as Sally had revealed earlier in the show that she had battled cancer.

Revealing how she wanted to buy a van to convert into a campervan to travel around in with her partner Mark, she said: “And if there was a little bit left over, five years ago I was diagnosed with lung cancer, and my friends were absolutely amazing and were with me every step of the way.

“I also got the all-clear in March! So, I would love to treat them and pay them back.”

After she won the money, a stunned Sally exclaimed: “What a year! The all-clear in March and now this! But I’m not going to hang up my lollipop though!”
