PEOPLE watching The Traitors series premiere became convinced they could work out the ‘Secret Traitor.’
The highly anticipated first episode of BBC One’s reality TV whodunnit returned and featured multiple twists and turns, leaving plenty of people gobsmacked.
But for amateur sleuths watching at home, they thought one of the new twists would actually help them in working out the identity of the ‘Secret Traitor’.
Beloved host Claudia Winkelman revealed early in the episode she would not only be selecting three Traitors to murder competitors in their path to winning £120,000, but also a secret fourth Traitor whose identity would remain unknown.
Their identity would remain under wraps to their fellow Traitors but also to viewers.
Claudia informed them: “The Secret Traitor will work alone. Each night they will provide you with a murder shortlist. You can only murder one of the people that is on the murder shortlist. You do not know who they are — but they know exactly who you are.”
The host pointed out would not include their own name to save themselves from homicide.
Barrister Hugo, 51, communications boss Rachel, 42, and cyber crime guru Stephen, 32, were thrilled to get the nod as regular Traitors.
The challenge involved teams rowing to the middle of a loch to drag coffins to open graves in the hopes they were filled with gold to add to the prize pot. They managed to add £10,000 in total.
But in one of the premiere’s many twists, the graves had names of each of the competitors and placing a coffin in their grave would automatically put them up for murder.
People watching said this was actually a fast-track way to surmise who the Secret Traitor was.
“Wouldn’t the shortlist soon give away the secret traitor in the long term if they aren’t putting their name down?” wrote one person on X, formerly Twitter.
Another person posted: “So if a coffin goes in the grave of the secret traitor then they’re not going to be up for the chop, so then the traitors (and viewers) will discover the secret traitor?!”
And a third wrote: “Okay so if they can figure out who the secret traitor is they’re going to have to banish them as soon as possible.”
Then whittling down the shortlisted names for murder, viewers began ruling out who the Secret Traitor could be.
“So we know the secret traitor isn’t James, Netty or Maz. You’d think it wouldn’t be one of the traitors but I wouldn’t want to rule that out already,” wrote one fan on X.
Now that the series’ new twist has been revealed, Claudia shared how the cast reacted to it on set.
“I don’t want to give anything away but — livid. Livid, yes,” she said.
