The Great British Bake Off viewers brand show ‘cringe, nonsense-ridden and a waste of time’ just minutes into premiere as Noel Fielding’s return to TV is overshadowed with complaints

The Great British Bake Off fans brutally branded the show ‘cringe, nonsense-ridden and a waste of time’ just minutes into the latest premiere.

Tuesday evening saw the highly-anticipated return of the much-loved Channel 4 programme as it enters its sixteenth series.

Alison Hammond, 50, and Noel Fielding, 52, returned as presenters, alongside judges Paul Hollywood, 59, and Prue Leith, 85.

Although many were over the moon that GBBO is back, there were plenty of things that viewers weren’t happy about.

The episode got off to a bad start with its opening Jurassic Park-themed sketch.

Prue, Alison and Noel drove into ‘Jurassic Bake’ and funnyman Noel asked: ‘Why is Prue dressed as Colonel Sanders?’

Wearing a white beard and circular glasses, Prue said: ‘I have finally achieved my lifetime ambition of cloning a dinosaur with human DNA…’

Moments later the ground started to shake and she said: ‘Oh no! He’s escaped. Tyranno-Paul-rus Rex.’

It ended with the dinosaur eating Noel – and viewers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to complain about it.

‘What the fudge was that pathetic opening of Great British Bake Off… Thought I’d gone back to cheesy 80’s kids telly… Hope the show’s better than the intro…

‘#GBBO I’m very excited for this year’s bake off. But what the fudge was that opening sketch! I was cringing for them. Please stick to presenting and judging.’

‘Opening was awful and strange, not sure who came up with that!’

‘Not a fan of the intro, found it cringe. Just get on with the baking.’

‘#GBBO Stick to the baking guys. That beginning was excruciatingly cringe.’

Meanwhile others shared their annoyance over the TV scheduling as it clashed with the first episode of the new series of The Great British Sewing Bee.

GBBO aired on Channel 4 between 8pm and 9:30pm, while the GBSB was on between 9pm and 10pm.

One fumed on X: ‘Would be interested to see stats on how many viewers switch over from Bake Off on Channel 4 to BBC1 for Sewing Bee at 9, who decided a bloody overlap was a good idea?’

‘UNACCEPTABLE OVERLAP.’

‘Glad it’s back, but I wish it didn’t overlap with Sewing Bee.’

‘I’m more annoyed about the clash of Bake Off and Sewing Bee.’

And to finish things off, others shared that they thought the wrong person was sent home.

Tuesday’s installment saw the contestants bake Swiss rolls, fondant fancies and an illusion cake.

While Nataliia impressed Prue and Paul and was named star baker, it was Hassan who didn’t do enough to stay in the competition.

Hassan said of his fellow co-stars: ‘Everyone is such a phenomenal baker, they are all such lovely people.

‘Even though it’s been a short-lived experience, I have enjoyed it.

‘Hopefully I can reflect on some things and then maybe get back to baking when I get a chance.’

But fans weren’t happy with the decision.

One said on X: ‘Sad for Hassan, I couldn’t speak more highly of him.’

‘Big mistake sending Hassan home so early.. that man is comedy gold!!! #Hassan #GBBO.’

‘Awww Hassan…..I mean….he wasn’t great, but we deserve to have him for a couple more episodes #GBBO.’

It comes after fans of The Great British Bake Off went wild as Noel posted a selfie with Paul to plug the latest installment of the Channel 4 hit.

Noel shared a smouldering snap of him and fellow Bake Off presenter Paul, as the pair looked serious for the camera with the iconic Union Jack bunting in the background.

‘Tonight!’ wrote Noel on Instagram, tagging both the Bake Off and Channel 4 accounts.

Excited fans were overjoyed, and rushed to the comments to share their support.

‘Can’t wait!’ wrote one, while another chimed in: ‘It’s gonna be epic! Bring on the knitwear.’

‘Can’t wait,’ said another, adding: ‘And a huge good luck to all the bakers.’

Last night marked the actor’s first on-screen appearance since the axing of his comedy show The Completely Made Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin after just one season.

The 52-year-old has also been struggling with health issues, although he has been deliberately private about this aspect of his life.

The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays on Channel 4 and is available to stream on channel4.com.
