WHILE Christmas is traditionally a time of exchanging gifts, unfortunately some presents miss the mark.
But people are hitting Vinted to profit from the disappointment, and there’s a date just around the corner that’s the optimum time to list.

According to experts, Sunday January 4th is the day in question – with the volume of listings rising to a whopping three times more than the usual daily rate.
The date – the first Sunday of January – has been dubbed “Sell-It Sunday”, and Vinted said research shows that last year’s most popular listings on the day included jewellery, perfumes, make-up and women’s toiletries.
Each of the categories gets more popular in the wake of Christmas because they are among the most common presents exchanged, along with gift sets.
While buyers are keen to find a bargain in the entertainment or electronic fields.
Fashion remains the most frequently listed category on Vinted though, with people keen to get rid of clothes they got for Christmas that don’t fit.
The research also shows that one in six people questioned estimated the value of their unused items to be more than £1,000, while 51 per cent of people reckon they have around £400 worth.
“Sell-It Sunday isn’t just the moment unwanted gifts get a second life,” Jessie de la Merced, VP corporate affairs at Vinted, said.
“It’s become a national reset, a day when millions of people turn clutter into cash, explore fresh styles and discover everything from fashion to electronics on Vinted.
“It shows how second-hand shopping continues to grow as a smart, stylish choice for 2026.”
She also encouraged people to check their wardrobes ahead of January 4th, so that they can not only find items they can resell but also prep listings more efficiently.
Another category that looks set to be popular in the New Year is accessories and nightwear – with seasonal wardrobe changes responsible, alongside the resale of Christmas gifts.
Savvy shopper Georgia explained in a video on her TikTok page how she’s already taking advantage of Christmas resales, as she typed in “unwanted Christmas gifts” into the search bar on Vinted.
“People are selling Charlotte Tilbury, White Fox, Prada, Gucci, you name it, it’s on there,” she said, showing the packed homepage on her Vinted.
“It’s on there for a fraction of the price, because people don’t want the gifts and they just don’t want to tell you they didn’t want it.”
“Who doesn’t love Boxing Day sales?” she added in the video caption.
In fact, Vinted is already encouraging people to pop unwanted gifts online to sell, with messages popping up on phones reading: “Won’t use that gift?
Do you need to pay tax on items sold on Vinted?
QUICK facts on tax from the team at Vinted…
- The only time that an item might be taxable is if it sells for more than £6,000 and there is profit (sells for more than you paid for it). Even then, you can use your capital gains tax-free allowance of £3,000 to offset it.
- Generally, only business sellers trading for profit (buying goods with the purpose of selling for more than they paid for them) might need to pay tax. Business sellers who trade for profit can use a tax-free allowance of £1,000, which has been in place since 2017.
