While there’s no better place for outfit inspiration than the Instagram app, the reality is that most of the fashion influencers we follow have a wardrobe few of us can afford. Shirt dresses from Simkhai, suede bags from Liffner and raffia sandals from Aquazzura; our feeds are a parade of high-end brands. But looking like our most polished selves doesn’t have to come with a designer price tag.

As editors it’s our job to scour the high street for the sort of pieces that look far more expensive than their price tag. (And there’s no bigger reward than being able to reply, ‘Oh, no, this dress is actually from M&S’ when someone asks whether it’s from Reformation.) But can we let you in on another secret? Some of the best basics to elevate your wardrobe can be found in the same place you’re doing your weekly food shop: supermarkets.

Our advice? Stroll (or scroll) past the ‘on-trend’ pieces and look for versatile wardrobe staples that you’ll want to wear for years to come. Avoid synthetics such as polyester, as well as overpowering colours and prints. Instead, opt for clean lines (a timeless design will always look more designer), premium fabrics (think: cottons, linens and viscose), neutral colours (whites, beiges, blues and blacks) or rich tones (deep browns, yellows and reds).

Below, we’ve rounded the most expensive-looking supermarket buys you can pick up in-store or online right now, from a co-ord from Tu at Sainsbury’s and a midi dress from F&F at Tesco to barrel jeans from George at Asda. And the best part? Nothing costs more than £40.
