Tesco sparks outrage by hiking plastic bags to a ‘ridiculous’ price

TESCO has enraged customers by hiking the cost of its carrier bags.

Stores have been charging customers to buy carrier bags for years, and one eagle-eyed shopper has warned punters to simply bring their own.

The customer posted the warning to the Food Finds UK Official Facebook page following the steep increase.

“From October 29 Tesco bag for life will be 40p,” they fumed.

“Make sure you take your own (sorry not food but useful info).”

Punters flocked to the comments to share their frustration over the hike.

“What a joke, I remember when they where free, and then 5p,” one said.

A second seethed: “What a joke ffs, it’s ridiculous!”

However, some shoppers defended the move.

One customer wrote: “The original point was to get people to stop wastefully buying bags.

“People didn’t care, so they increased the tax.

“Ultimately, start adapting and stop whining.

“The wasteful nature of Gen X and prior is still prevalent, unfortunately.”

A second wrote: “People are complaining. Just take your own bags.

“That was the whole purpose of bag charges: to encourage people to use reusable bags.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We encourage customers to bring shopping bags with them to cut down on plastic, but we sell a wide range of reusable bags in case they are needed.

“Our cheapest Bags for Life cost 40p and are made of 100% recycled plastic.

“They can be reused many times, and if they become worn out can be replaced for free at our customer service desks and recycled again.”

It comes after Sainsbury’s shoppers were left furious as many have been left forced to pay extra at the till.

The major supermarket has put up the cost of its Bags for Life from 30p to 40p – so if you forget to bring a bag, you’ll be paying even more now.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We’ve kept the price of our Bag for Life the same for three years.

“We recently updated it to balance rising costs and our continued donations to good causes, including initiatives tackling food poverty, which are supported by all profits from the sales.
