The car was seen racing down University Avenue in Los Gatos before it ploughed into the front of the well-loved coffee shop.

The shocking crash took place at 9pm on November 28 and landed the 90-year-old driver in hospital.

Miraculously, no one was inside the establishment at the time – it had been closed for Thanksgiving.

Police say alcohol may be involved in the crash and confirmed that the driver was in a serious but stable condition at a local hospital.

Photos show the complete destruction of the coffee shop, with the dark-coloured sedan inside the shop and surrounded by rubble.

Coffee-shop owners are heartbroken by the accident, which saw the inside of their business almost completely destroyed.

Founder and Co-owner of Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company, Teri Hope got a call late Thanksgiving night, and ran straight to the scene.

She said she was “just devastated with the destruction, but incredibly grateful that no one was injured aside from the driver of the vehicle”.

Hope said that on any other night, the coffee shop would have been full of people, and is relieved that more people weren’t hurt in the crash.

Coffee shop regulars were shaken by the incident.

Regular Sheila Lebedenko said: “So many times we’ve sat in that room that’s been devastated.”

“To think that you could be sitting there drinking coffee, eating pastry, watching musicians and that could just suddenly happen.”

Police said the 90-year-old driver, who may have been drunk, was alone in the car.

They stated: “Alcohol may have played a role in this incident but all factors are being looked at as part of the ongoing investigation.”

“The business was closed and unoccupied at the time of this incident and the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.”

“Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is urged to contact the LGMSPD at 408-354-8600.”

The damage is extensive, with photos showing bricks strewn across the floor and tables snakes to pieces.

Hope said: “Fixtures and furniture in half the building have been demolished.”

Despite the destruction, the coffee shop owner hopes to reopen her business soon.

She said: “The coffee roaster itself is still intact and wasn’t affected. That is the heart of our business.”

Hope added: “I believe we are going to be back on our feet shortly.”
