Susanna Reid, 54, defends Kate Middleton’s new blonde hairstyle and reveals she was inspired to try out the lighter look to ‘flatter her ageing skin’

Kate, 43, shocked fans last week when she emerged with a new ‘bronde’ hairdo, a bold departure from her trademark chestnut tresses.

Coincidentally, Susanna, 54, also switched to bronde – a tone somewhere brunette and blonde – at the same time, and revealed on Monday’s episode of Lorraine that she decided to go lighter because it was more ‘flattering’ on her ‘ageing skin’.

Discussing Kate’s similar new style, Susanna mused: ‘The Princess Of Wales still has very, very long, thick hair and I noticed a lot of the commentary is that maybe it’s time to go a little bit shorter.

‘But again, it’s her distinctive look and the change that she’s made is to go blonder.’

Lorraine then interjected: ‘She looks absolutely beautiful  – people have been saying has she got some hair pieces in – like I’ve got – the ones you just clip in – so what?’

As Susanna emphatically agreed in her support of Kate, she recalled that when she opted for a bob in 2023, Cher told her in an interview that she should grow her hair back.

Revealing that she then used extensions to achieve the look, Susanna confessed: ‘After Cher told me I had to go long, I originally went to hair pieces.

‘They give your hair the most amazing thick texture. I turned back time and went long!’

While Susanna and Kate both went bronde in the same week, the GMB host insisted her decision wasn’t influenced by the royal.

As Lorraine compared the ‘formidable duo’s’ very similar new look, Susanne laughed: ‘You’d think it was because I saw the Princess Of Wales and thought I like that look.

‘But actually it’s because I’ve started to go a bit lighter as I’ve grown a few years older. I find having lighter pieces in my hair is a bit softer on ageing skin.’

As pictures flashed up of Susanna’s hair over the years, she confessed: ‘It’s a long time since I’ve had a completely natural hair colour!

‘Originally I was very, very brunette so when I started at ITV it was the full chestnut – look how much darker that is!

‘I just find that that shade now on my skin isn’t flattering – blonder is a little bit kinder.’

Kate’s bold new bronde look has sent the internet into meltdown in recent days.

After cruel trolls attacked the royal’s fresh look online, renowned stylist Sam McKnight and Princess Diana’s former hairdresser, 70, took to Instagram to issue a statement in her defence.

Hitting out at critics, he told followers that he was’shocked, horrified, dismayed and disgusted’ by the reaction.

‘A woman’s hair is very personal to her,’ he wrote. ‘It’s armor, defence, confidence and so much more.’

He continued: ‘I cannot believe how evil and lacking in any kind of empathy are the comments, the majority made apparently by other women, attacking a vulnerable other young woman, who has no choice, by dint of who she married and the role she took on, to bravely face the public.

‘I’m sure she would rather be away from the public arena. She has brilliantly and quietly, unselfishly represented our country, the soft power we still have as a nation.’

Remarking on Kate’s journey with her health – which the Princess opened up about with the public in March 2024 – he continued: ‘Cancer affects individuals differently, but is life changing for everyone.

‘So FFS LEAVE HER LONE. SHAME ON YOU.’
