Kamala Harris can’t catch a break, can she?

For decades, she rose well above her level of competence based on the fact that she made the right friends in the right political environment. Willie Brown, one of the most powerful politicians for decades in California, took a shine to her, and her career path was set.

She rose rapidly, becoming the District Attorney of San Francisco and then Attorney General of California. Not long after she was elected as Senator from California, she became a candidate for president within two years–the favorite of the smart set until she crashed and burned with actual voters outside California, who couldn’t give a rip what the establishment in California thought about her. Willie who?

Still, she is of Asian and African descent, and those count as major qualifications for Democrats, so Joe Biden selected her to be Vice President, a job for which she had zero aptitude. She became the Democrats’ nominee in 2024, the old-fashioned way–she was installed by an establishment, avoiding the messy process of asking the voters.

Having wasted untold amounts of money in her vain attempt to take down Donald Trump–the most vilified man in America–she wants back into office. Given her name ID, she could be the frontrunner if she jumps into the governor’s race, only this time, the establishment wants none of it.

Many Democratic Party funders who boosted Kamala Harris last year are expressing a lack of enthusiasm about her possible return to the campaign trail, wary of the baggage a failed presidential candidate would bring if she runs for California governor, our Melanie Mason and Jeremy B. White report this morning.

Even Harris’ supporters have sensed the mood swings.

“There was more enthusiasm at first,” said Mather Martin, a San Francisco-based fundraiser who has worked for past Harris campaigns. “I think it waned a bit.”

Fallout from 2024 … One California Democrat who contributed six-figures to her presidential bid said a Harris candidacy would only serve as a reminder of how “traumatizing” the last election was.

“Kamala just reminds you we are in this complete shit storm. With Biden, we got bamboozled … I think she did the best she could in that situation, but obviously she knew about the cognitive decline too,” the donor said. “I’ve written so many checks because I knew the Trump administration would be horrible, but we’re living in a nightmare because of the Democrats. I’m furious at them, truly.”

The apathy is one of several obstacles that Harris must hurdle if she runs for governor — an option that has of late demanded more of her attention as she races against a self-imposed, end-of-summer deadline to make a decision.

Harris is not, as some people think, exactly stupid. While not especially intelligent, her biggest flaw is related to how she rose to prominence–she has had to think not at all, accomplish anything, learn how to make decisions, or articulate the few ideas she has managed to come up with. Having been many things, she had done nothing other than what she had been told would get her to the next rung on the ladder.

She is a midwit whose easy path to the top forced her to learn nothing, a public speaker with no self-discipline or ability to sharpen her message, and a policymaker with no curiosity or insight into policy. Like a third-generation scion of a wealthy family, she has lived off the capital others handed to her, and has led what amounts to an intellectually dissolute life. You often see wasted talent. She never would have been great at politics, but she could have been competent enough to be a State Senator or something.

She never had to be, and she is too old to learn how. She can’t even make decisions about her career without the crutches provided by outsiders.

It is just possible that she could become Governor of California by default, but nobody seriously wants that to happen. Gavin Newsom rose to prominence due to his exceptional speaking skills, charm, and extraordinary good looks. He is a genuinely awful governor who makes Jerry Brown look great by comparison, but he fits the cultural mold that the wealthy left love to embrace. Harris? Not so much. She isn’t glib in the way that Newsom is, and isn’t smart enough to charm or excite tech bros and venture capitalists who can detect vapidity when they see it. She doesn’t speak the language, nor does she know their issues.

Everybody wants her to go away.

But what else can she do? She has no skills. Would be a rainmaker of modest talents, has the same prospects for national office as Hunter Biden, and lacks the talents to be a front man in the way that Joe Biden did.

Richard Nixon hit a low point in 1962 and appeared to have no prospects either, but he had something Harris does not: he was smart and driven. Harris? Not so much.
