Cody Record went from being an educator to helping educators by providing education solutions for classrooms as the Assistant Director of Region 10 ESC. His journey began when he realized he was ready to pursue his Ed.D. However, as a husband and father to two young daughters, he needed a program that would allow him to stay present for his family, church and community.
After researching and speaking with several universities, Cody connected with one of ACU Online’s admissions advisors to learn more about the Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership. ACU Online felt individualized. I immediately felt like I was more than just a number to them,” he said.
Born to Lead
“I always felt I was meant to lead; it’s a calling,” Cody said. That sense of purpose was one of the biggest reasons he decided to pursue graduate school. “I wanted to learn to lead others who had been in my shoes as a student and teacher.”
Cody was drawn to the Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership program because it offered the tools needed to refine his leadership at the highest level. He still reads the texts he was assigned during doctoral studies and reflects on how they contributed to his growth as an educator. “I learned I didn’t have to be good at everything, just focus on the abilities God gave me. I still use those books daily; they help me handle different personalities at work.”
Overcoming Obstacles With Support
Cody admitted he wasn’t always the best student. “I had a hard time writing essays in school,” he said. Cody also talked about moments where he doubted his ability to complete his degree.
His biggest challenge came during his dissertation. “It took a lot of courage for me to reach out and ask for a change,” he recalled. After meeting with his dissertation chair, he was connected with Dr. Harper, who helped turn things around. “She took my experience to the next level and worked with my schedule. She did whatever it took to help me write and defend my dissertation.”

When reflecting on his time at ACU Online, Cody expressed deep appreciation for everything he learned during his graduate program. “I feel confident in my experience and time at ACU. There’s not going to be anything I can’t accomplish,” he said.
For Cody, his degree represents much more than credentials; it’s an investment in his growth and calling. “ACU Online laid the foundation for me to keep growing as a leader and educator,” he said. “I can’t put a price on how much it’s given back to me, my family and my network. I can’t put a value on it.”
Cody’s Advice For Anyone Considering a Graduate Degree
“The best advice I can give is to trust the process. The process is designed to be intense, but you will come out of it a better person.”
Cody emphasized the importance of doing what is best for yourself as opposed to trying to fit in with everyone else. Trying to find a place that fits you is one of the most important things a student can do for their education. On top of this, Cody also mentioned that it’s important to put in the work and truly invest in yourself to build your skills.
