Choosing a major came naturally for Bianca Hair. From an early age, she was drawn to computers, technology, gaming and learning how computers work and are built. Her interest in technology also runs in the family. Bianca’s uncle works in IT, helping others solve technical challenges and security issues, which further sparked her curiosity. While pursuing a degree in cybersecurity itself excited her, relocating to another town was not an option.
Bianca needed a flexible path that allowed her to stay close to home and take classes at her own pace. That’s when she discovered Abilene Christian University’s online B.S. in Cybersecurity, a program that offered the same curriculum and content in an online modality. After applying and meeting with her assigned advisor, Bianca began her coursework in December of last year. “I didn’t want to go far for school,” she shared. “The online program was the perfect fit.”
Joining the Wildcat Family
After joining the Wildcat family, Bianca quickly realized that ACU Online offered more than coursework alone. “It’s interesting, and I’m really good at it,” Bianca said. As she progressed through the program, her confidence continued to grow. When asked about her favorite part of being an ACU Online student, Bianca didn’t hesitate. “My professors,” she said. “They’re always there for me, friendly, helpful and supportive. And I have the best advisor ever.” From the application process to her first day of class and beyond, Bianca has felt encouraged every step of the way.
While her faith and relationship with God are deeply personal, Bianca has shared that ACU Online consistently supports her spiritual growth. Building Confidence and Connection Through Coursework
Through discussion posts, video assignments, and group projects, Bianca maintains close connections with her professors and classmates. Her natural talent and curiosity for cybersecurity allowed her to fully engage with the material and support others along the way. Classmates often turn to Bianca when they have questions or need help understanding the coursework. “I love helping them,” Bianca said.
Bianca is currently learning to code and has expressed her excitement in learning fundamentals that she can apply to her future career. The coursework not only focuses on cybersecurity and information technology but also teaches cybersecurity techniques that can be applied locally, nationally and even globally. Other parts of the curriculum that are helping prepare Bianca for her future in cybersecurity are the 15 credit hours that can be awarded to earning cybersecurity certifications for CompTIA+, Cisco and more. Bianca will also earn two other certifications through her coursework: Cybersecurity 1: Certificate in Fundamental System Security and Cybersecurity 2: Certificate in Essential System Forensics and Defense.
ACU Online’s cybersecurity program has challenged Bianca to stay consistent with her deadlines and understand the value of her grades, taking ownership of her education. These lessons have strengthened her discipline and helped her grow and become a better student.
Bianca Beyond The Classroom
Beyond academics, Bianca is eager to stay involved and continue building connections through student clubs and activities. Outside of class, she enjoys drawing and considers herself a very artistic person who loves painting and creating. One of her recent projects was a replica of The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. Bianca also enjoys playing video games in her free time, including Animal Crossing, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.
Looking ahead, Bianca is still exploring what the future holds. While she hasn’t decided on a specific career path, she remains in close communication with her professors as she plans her next steps. Despite this, Bianca is confident that her undergraduate degree is equipping her with the professional skills and certifications necessary to tackle any role she pursues. One goal she does know for sure: she wants to build her own computer someday, designing something functional, creative and uniquely her own.
