Socialists Suffering Seismic Shakes in Spain – HotAir

I know that these lessons now being taught to our European brethren will be ignored by our routinely and supremely confident socialists here, but the fact remains, and the lesson never ends differently –

The s**t doesn’t ever work.

EVER

Not when someone new and prettier tries it. Not when it’s tried somewhere else.

Not when it’s tried three times fast in a row.

Socialism.

Never.

Works.

The latest example is courtesy of the Spanish national experiment.

They’ve got this youngish, sexy, suave kind of guy who’s got the whole Latin thing down – smooth looking and talking – and he not only sold the country a bill of goods, he’s sold them down the socialist river.

Here’s his ‘Happy Holidays‘ message, sans the word ‘Christmas’ so he doesn’t piss off the multitudinous Muslims he’s flooded the country with. They’re already problematic enough.

…Pedro Sánchez wishes “happy holidays” to Spaniards, avoiding the word Christmas so as not to offend Muslims.

But, hey – the Spanish went willingly enough, so it’s on them, and they’re going to have to extricate themselves.

Prime Minister Sanchez’s star had been dimming with the Spanish people before this year, but the past nine months have been brutal. His attempt to raise his profile on the world stage by attending the annual World Economic Forum soiree made him look more like a pathetic social climber. Besides a politically mortally wounded Olaf Scholz, Sanchez turned out to be the only government head of any note to attend. Everyone from Asia to Washington avoided Davos like the plague.

That was only the start of his terrible year.

At the end of April, sixty million Spaniards and a good chunk of pissed-off Frenchmen had their lives grind to a halt and were plunged into the dark. They had no power thanks to Sanchez’s rickety renewables blowing the entire grid for the Iberian Peninsula and beyond.

¡GRACIAS, ESPAÑA!

Corruption allegations have been building against the Sanchez government, with one scandal as spicy as Sanchez himself being accused of living off the proceeds of his father-in-law’s gay brothels.

¡OLÉ!

It also added friction to the mix when the accused assailants in a botched assassination attempt against the 80-year-old founder of the right-wing VOX party were found to be Iranians. Calls rang out for Sanchez’s resignation over allowing a state of affairs where foreign terrorists could try to take out his opposition.

The multiple hits to Sanchez’s reputation, coupled with a 500% increase in the number of illegals landing – and staying – on Spanish soil, have brought the populist Vox roaring back into favor with many voters. Adding to the Socialist consternation, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the opposition People’s Party (PP), said he would be more than willing to work with the Vox party and would not apply a cordon-sanitaire as had happened in so many other European countries when faced with a populist party’s rise.

Núñez Feijóo said he would respect whatever choice voters made and not isolate those choices from participating in the government.

The PP leader is looking like a wise, rational man concerned with what is in the best interests of his country after regional elections were held in Spain this past weekend.

The Sanchez Socialists were trounced and, thanks to voter support for Vox, the PP is now is firmly in control of a regional legislature they won in 2023 by the skin of their teeth.

Spain’s ruling Socialists suffer historic defeat in regional election

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez‘s scandal-hit Socialists endured a crushing defeat in a regional election in Extremadura on Sunday, which saw far-right Vox make big gains.

The Socialists, who lead the minority national coalition, have been rocked by corruption and sexual misconduct allegations and the vote in the rural southwestern region was seen as an indicator of the party’s wider prospects.

They won just 18 seats in the 65-seat assembly down from 28, their worst-ever regional result in Extremadura.

The Socialists had governed the region for decades but the conservative Popular Party (PP) took control with Vox’s support in 2023.

Frenemies, if you will.

Vox is also aware of its growing strength among voters and seems unafraid to flex its muscle legislatively.

The press is referring to it as a ‘far-right surge,’ but it’s really a simple resetting and return of a far-left agenda towards the middle.

Spain’s far-right Vox ‌party doubled its seats ‌in the Extremadura region in Sunday’s election, complicating coalition talks with poll leaders the conservative People’s Party and highlighting ‍its strength ahead of other regional votes next year.

…The losses in ‌a region it governed for decades put further pressure on the ‌PSOE – whose minority national ‍government has been weakened by a series of scandals. Regional elections are due in Aragon, Castile and Leon and Andalusia next year.

Extremadura leader Maria Guardiola, of the PP, called the snap election after failing to pass the regional budget as Vox refused to back it.

Sunday’s election extends a rightward shift in Extremadura that began in 2023, with the combined PP–Vox bloc now taking just over 60% of ballots cast.

The stunning Vox gains have also put the PP’s frenemies gambit to the test, as the party had shied away from Vox in hopes of peeling off those disillusioned socialist voters who were now in the middle.

…With turnout low, the PSOE haemorrhaged more than 108,000 votes. Rather than consolidating behind the centre-right PP, a substantial share of these votes shifted towards Vox and the left-wing United for Extremadura (UxE), which is affiliated with Sumar, a junior partner in Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s national coalition. Vox increased its seat count from five to 11, while UxE rose from four to seven seats.

Extremadura, traditionally a Socialist stronghold, had already fallen to the PP under María Guardiola in 2023. Her minority government, formed after difficult negotiations with Vox, collapsed earlier this year when Vox refused to back the regional budget, prompting a snap election. Guardiola had hoped to secure an absolute majority but fell four seats short of the 33 required, once again leaving her dependent on a strengthened Vox to form a stable government.

The results also pose a strategic dilemma for the PP, which has sought to distance itself from Vox in an effort to appeal to centrist voters. That approach now appears increasingly difficult to maintain, as Vox’s electoral base continues to expand at the expense of both major parties.

The Extremadura results are leading to uncomfortable questions about the Sanchez coalition’s longevity going forward.

Sanchez has corruption troubles close to home to deal with in the next year, in addition to running the country while trying to survive several more regional elections coming this spring.

…It was the first regional election since a court ordered Jose Luis Abalos, a former top aide to Sanchez, to stand trial over claims he took kickbacks related to the awarding of public contracts.

The prime minister’s wife, Begona Gomez, and younger brother, David are also facing graft allegations.

David Sanchez is set to go on trial for influence peddling in May along with 10 other defendants including the Socialist candidate to head Extremadura’s government, Miguel Angel Gallardo — who called Sunday’s election results “really bad”.

The Socialists have also come under fire in recent weeks for allegedly failing to address sexual harassment by senior male officials.

…The result has been interpreted in Madrid as more than a routine regional loss: for many figures in and around the Socialist Party, including in the media, it has raised questions over whether the government can survive until 2027.

It could be a very bumpy ride.

PEOPLE ARE MOVING IN A CERTAIN DIRECTION

That absolutely seems to be a true statement for Europe and Latin America – everywhere but New York and Chicago, basically.

I’d say there are lessons that could be learned, but they never are.

Socialist believers always insist on sticking that wet finger in the socket for themselves.
