Shocking moment police clamber over car and Taser driver after 27-minute high speed chase

This is the shocking moment police clambered over a car and Tasered the driver after a 27-minute high speed chase.

Bryan Smith, 47, from the Easton area of Bristol, was pursued by officers across the city on September 2 after he stole a car and tried to make his escape in it.

The driver mounted pavements, swerved onto the wrong side of the road and hit 80mph in a 30mph zone in an attempt to flee.

He even evaded a stinger, a spiked device thrown into the road by officers to puncture the tyres of fleeing vehicles.

A force helicopter had to be sent out to keep track of him from above as the blue VW hatchback sped away from traffic officers on the ground.

But the vehicle eventually became jammed between two cars, which he had tried to bash through and past, in the Fishponds area of the city.

It allowed officers from Avon and Somerset Police to finally apprehend him – in quite a dramatic way.

Striking footage filmed from inside one of the vehicles stuck on one side of the stolen car shows a policeman jumping onto its bonnet.

Meanwhile, several of his colleagues bash in the windows of the VW with their batons to reach the driver inside, who they quickly Taser.

Smith admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and without insurance and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

He was jailed for 16 months at Bristol Crown Court on October 9.

The driver was first spotted by roads policing officer PC Dan Hamblin, in a car reported stolen a few days prior which bore cloned registration plates.

But when the policeman turned on his blue lights and siren, Smith quickly drove off.

PC Hamblin said the kinds of manoeuvres the man was doing were some of ‘the most reckless and exceedingly dangerous’ he had seen in his time with the unit.

He said: ‘Thanks to the skill of officers and the support of the police helicopter, he was stopped without any person coming to harm.’

Officers can be spotted pursuing him down all kinds of roads, including dual carriageways, large complex junctions and quiet residential streets.

They calmly relay tactical information over the radio before their moment comes to take the driver off the roads, which sees them act without hesitation.
