Striker Pedro opened the scoring early on before Jorge Carrascal wrapped up the three points in injury time.

The defeat was a big blow for Cruzeiro, who had finished third in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A last season.

The Belo Horizonte club have picked up just two points from their opening five games and are without a win.

After the full-time whistle, the travelling fans at the Maracanã let their frustration be known.

A video taken from below showed the disgruntled Cruzeiro supporters chanting against their team and to the Flamengo fans.

One fan’s temper boiled over though as they lobbed a chair into the home crowd.

It did not appear to hit anyone and therefore, no one was injured by it.

The seat was not the only object to be thrown as bottles and other missiles could be seen being exchanged between the sets of fans.

Cruzeiro fans have also been protesting decisions off the pitch as they took aim at manager Leonardo Jardim.

The Portuguese coach left the club for Flamengo at the end of the 2025 season.

The protest took place before the match as they showered counterfeit money with Jardim’s image on.

Jardim left despite having one more year on his contract with Cruzeiro, as he stated personal problems as the reason.

Reportedly, the club did not seek payment due to the broken contract only for Jardim to take over Flamengo following the sacking of Felipe Luis.

The former Chelsea star was axed by the Brazilian giants after having “secret talks” over replacing Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge.

Cruzeiro will be hoping to kickstart their season in their next game against basement club Vasco da Gama.

The team does boast some notable players such as former West Brom ace Matheus Pereira and ex-Bournemouth and Leeds winger Luis Sinisterra.

Former Arsenal prospect and Norwich City loanee Marquinhos is also contracted to the club.

The chair throw comes just days after Cruzeiro’s players were involved in a 23-MAN brawl.

A huge fight broke out among players during the Mineiro Championship final as they faced Atletico Mineiro.

The clash resulted in 23 players receiving red cards retrospectively, the most in Brazilian football history.
