Erica was hit on the head by what appeared to be a can of drink thrown by a member of the crowd during Saturday’s fourball session.

McIlroy had just secured a point for Team Europe alongside Shane Lowry before making his way back to the 17th hole to cheer on his team-mates.

As he did so his wife was struck by the missile, and the pair turned around sharply, with Erica giving the crowd a death stare.

McIlroy fumed and initially began to advance towards the crowd but was held back by security.

In another clip a fan is heard shouting, “Somebody threw a drink at her!”

McIlroy brushed something from her hat and asked, “Are you OK?” as security rushed to surround the couple.

Erica was reportedly reduced to tears following the torrent of abuse she received.

She is said to have had ‘tears streaming down her face’ as she and McIlroy walked off the course.

They were locked arm-in-arm as he made sure his wife was OK.

McIlroy too was subjected to a wave of hate throughout his fourball round with Lowry, and at one point refused to play his putt until there was quiet from the crowd.

While a cry of “freedom!” from one spectator led McIlroy to turn around and say, “shut the f*** up!”

He was hit with chants of “f*** you Rory” along with insults about his family and personal life.

McIlroy revealed he was left drained by the abuse but admitted it was “very f***ing satisfying” to stick it back to the abusers by walking away with 3.5 points and Ryder Cup victory.

He also praised his wife for her resolve and composure in the face of such adversity.

The Northern Irishman said, “It should be off-limits, but obviously it wasn’t this week.

“Erica is fine. She’s a very, very strong woman.

“She handled everything this week with class, poise and dignity like she always has.

“I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.”

As applause broke out among the European players, close pal Lowry then added: “I was out there for two days with Erica McIlroy, and the amount of abuse that she received was astonishing.

“The way she was out there supporting her husband and supporting her team was unbelievable, and kudos to her for that.”

McIlory received taunts about his previous relationships and was mocked over rumours linking him to golf journalist Amanda Balionis.

He and Erica split last year and even filed for divorce before a U-turn saw them patch things up.
