Sheep and cheerful! Ram-paging animals flock through supermarket in Germany

Scores of hungry sheep flocked their way into a supermarket after breaking free from a nearby field, leaving customers bemused by the unusual invasion.

Video footage caught the moment around 50 sheep were seen spilling into discount supermarket Penny, in the southern German state of Bavaria on Monday.

After busting through the doors, the sheep huddled together close to the checkout area for around 20 minutes before making their way back out again.

Customers and shop workers attempted to encourage the animals to leave by banging on the counters – but the wooly baa-gain hunters seemed content to remain in the store until they were ready to exit.

According to local German broadcaster ZDF, ‘they caused utter chaos’, with footage capturing the sound of cluttering bottles and groceries scattered across the floor.

Some customers were even forced to jump onto conveyor belts and checkouts to escape the mischievous mammals.

The sheep are understood to have become separated from a larger flock of 500 animals.

When they did finally decide to reunite with their fleecy friends, the flock scampered at speed towards the doors – but not before literally going wild in the aisles and leaving a trail of manure behind them.

According to their red-faced shepherd, the animals might have mistook a shopping bag for a feed bag and headed towards the store in search of food.

Looking at the lighter side of the situation, the German embassy in London shared a picture of the flock from inside the store.

The embassy wrote on X: ’50 runaway sheep ram-paged through a German supermarket in rural Baa-varia, causing shear mania on Monday morning.

‘After breaking away from their 500-strong herd, the brazen sheep spent 20 mins milling around in the Penny supermarket before ewe-turning and seeing themselves out.’
