Shamed Scots doctor used secret spy cameras to film 30 people because ‘he was concerned about his small penis’

A PERVERT doctor claimed he used spy cameras to secretly record 30 people because he worried about his small manhood.

Shamed medic Ju Young Um, 34, told a jury he had body dysmorphia and wanted to compare himself to other men.

But nine of Um’s victims were women, Glasgow Sheriff Court heard.

The pervert hid tiny cameras in air fresheners and a smoke alarm in the bathroom and spare bedroom of his flat in the city’s Hyndland.

Three of the men and one of the women filmed were fellow doctors.

The anaesthetist also recorded a male colleague within the staff accommodation at Dumfries and Galloway Infirmary.

Um, who also worked in Glasgow, denied wrongdoing.

But jurors decided his sickening acts, which were carried out between November 2020 and August 2023, were for sexual gratification.

And they found him guilty of 23 breaches of the Sexual Offences Act. Evidence was given during the trial by Um’s first victim.

The man, who was recorded by the fiend while being intimate with a female, said: “It makes me feel shocked, betrayed and disgusted.

“Not only because it invaded my privacy but my now wife’s as well.

“I feel like I let her down letting this person into our lives.

“Someone who I trusted in work in a professional capacity. I feel let down and horrified.”

Um had initially used a mobile phone to record the man through a window while he showered.

He later installed a spy cam in his colleague’s bedroom at the Dumfries hospital.

Another doctor was filmed on the toilet at Um’s home after going there for dinner.

And a third medic was the victim of nine recordings made of him showering and using the toilet over a three-month period.

Um had also been renting out his spare room through Airbnb.
Prosecutor Lauren Aitchison said of him: “His diagnosis of body dysmorphia didn’t come until after he was arrested.

“He said all those years led to extremes of secretly recording people. Why wait until you are caught to get treatment?”

She added: “Um violated people’s trust. He recorded them naked, showering, using the toilet and on some occasions having sex.

“He had the videos saved automatically into a folder, which was backed up on hard drives and pen drives just in case.”

Um had testified he was diagnosed with “suspected gigantism” when he was a teenager which was “possibly” why he had a “small penis”.

The jury heard he did not seek medical help until 20 years later.

Um further stated he did not want to view images on Google in case he came across illegal photographs.

And he claimed he did not view pornography as it was “exaggerated and bigger than your normal male.”

Um added he did not compare himself with patients as they were “people who trusted him”.

He is believed to have been working more recently as a lecturer.

Sheriff Owen Mullan deferred sentence until next month.

He granted Um bail and placed him on the Sex Offenders Register.
