Ruben Amorim responds to Cristiano Ronaldo criticism after Man Utd legend said he needed a ‘miracle’

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim accepts the club made mistakes in the past amid more criticism from Cristiano Ronaldo.

In an interview with Piers Morgan that aired in midweek, Ronaldo suggested Amorim would require a “miracle” to be a success at United.

The United great also claimed some members of the current squad are not good enough to play for the club and questioned the structure at United.

Ronaldo, 40, spoke damningly about United while he was still at the club in an unauthorised interview with Morgan in November 2022 that led to his abrupt departure.

Amorim, a former international teammate of Ronaldo’s, assured that United are attempting to rectify their errors under previous regimes.

Amorim said: “Of course, he knows and he has a huge impact in everything he says.

Premier League – Next Manager sacked betting odds: Who will be next to leave?

“What we need to focus on is the future. We as a club made a lot of mistakes in the past and we are trying to change that.

“Let’s focus not on what happened, let’s focus on what we are doing now. We are doing that, we are changing a lot of things we do in the structure, the way we do things, the way we want the players to behave.

“We are doing that and we are improving. So let’s focus on the way we are doing things.

“We are improving, let’s continue and let’s forget a little bit the past.”

United travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday lunchtime for their final fixture before the November internationals.

Spurs are unbeaten in seven games against United and won all four matches against them last season, including the Europa League final.

United were limply beaten 1-0 in Bilbao, a defeat that confirmed their season was the worst in 51 years.

Amorim insists United are a better team now and highlighted the areas that they have improved.

He added: “First of all, the characteristics of the players.

“We have different characteristics in our team, but we also have a lot of players that play last year so we are a better team.

“We play better, we understand the game better, we are more confident.

“We reached that final confident we could win because we were doing well in Europe. But in this moment we play with a different confidence, we manage the moments of the game better.

“But if you remember that game, they had that shot and won the game.

“So I expect a different game that we can play better but we have some luck to win the game.”

Amorim conceded United have a “problem” with their lack of clean sheets. United have conceded 16 goals in ten Premier League games and kept only one clean sheet.

Nottingham Forest and Brighton both scored twice against United in their recent matches and Amorim highlighted the defensive record of leaders Arsenal.

He said of the lack of clean sheets: “Yeah, it’s a problem. Especially if you see the league nowadays.

“The team that is winning all the games is not suffering goals. Maybe some shots on target. And that is a big thing, especially if you have talented players.

“If you defend well, in one opportunity you can score a goal and win a game.

“But I think it’s more a team thing. We need to defend better, we need to be more aggressive and that part of the energy when we defend with the ball we defender better.

“So everything is connected but we cannot suffer the amount of goals we are suffering.”
